Meet Luke Tandy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Tandy.

Hi Luke, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Skeleton Dust Records opened in downtown Dayton in October 2017. After working several unfulfilling jobs, I decided to take the plunge and pursue my dream of opening a record store. Thankfully, other people thought it was a good idea as well and we are still going strong today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We haven’t had too many really tough challenges, mostly just the general stress and uncertainty of running your own small business. The pandemic was probably the biggest challenge in terms of readjusting the way the business was operated as we were closed to the public for six months during the beginning. Fortunately, we already have a robust mail order component of the business which allowed us to remain afloat during that time (getting some help from the government was also integral to our survival).

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I like to consider our store as a place for true music lovers to shop. Specifically, we intend it to be a record store that is best suited for the customer that isn’t looking for something specific but is willing to browse the selection and find something cool or interesting, perhaps something that they didn’t know they needed in their collection but just had to have it. We largely focus on stocking our store with used items, so availability of items fluctuates on a day-to-day basis, and shopping our store with an open mind is best because you never know what will be there (or not be there). We also try to carry a diverse but curated selection of music that is often a reflection of our personal tastes. What sets us apart is that personal touch; you won’t find everything in our store but what you will find is a high-quality selection of music for a wide variety of listeners.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Be ready to change and adapt at a moment’s notice!
