Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie Brooks.
Hi Leslie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I graduated from high school in 1999 and immediately went into massage school at 18. I knew I always wanted to help people and as a high school athlete I was pretty interested in anatomy and physiology, and I liked to “fix things.” I was blessed to go into the Cincinnati school of medical massage, Blue Ash under the direction of Bill Neff, who was one of the top neuromuscular therapist in the city. I was always more interested in correction of issues instead of putting a Band-Aid on things. So, with Bill’s wisdom, I was able to start to understand why things occur and what to do about them.
My mother is a longtime personal trainer and just a lifetime of working around her and hearing her do her continuing education made me also understand a little bit of the exercise aspect.
I started working as a soccer coach in 1999 and in 2008, started my career at identity salons and spas, doing day spa work. I was super grateful for the experience, but it didn’t quite meet the needs and interests I had as a massage therapist, so I left there and was able to open my own massage therapy practice in a chiropractic office in 20 10.
I became a single parent in 2013 and experience in 2014 an abusive relationship that almost lost me my business. In 2015 I was diagnosed with complex PTSD from domestic violence and my whole life shifted when I entered into therapy with Dr. Rick Butts who does DARTT therapy. I entered into a Life coaching with Lynn Ellis at that time as well and I my life shifted into wanting to be a cycle breaker and not pass on some of my characteristics to my daughter.
I busted my butt from 2015-2018 doing life, coaching and therapy to try to find a happy whole life and pass that gift onto my daughter. I didn’t need it understanding of boundaries and my codependent behavior to overcome and become a better me.
In 2018 I met my current husband who is the love of my life, and we have daughters Ella and Harper.
I do believe that the last stage in healing is helping others, and with my coaching background and my believe in the infinite wisdom that each of us is designed with, I got my life coaching certification in 2022. I am currently in the stage of building. My coaching practice and developing programs for chronic people-pleasing and authenticity work. Very excited to give back and serve those who need to help much like I did.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Absolutely not. I have always had codependent tendencies. After becoming a single mom in 2013, and once again, entering into a people-pleasing cycle, I wound up in an abusive relationship in 2014 that lasted a year and forever change me. I struggle with chronic complex PTSD. Management of PTSD symptoms will be an ongoing THEME in my life.
As you know, we’re big fans of Leslie Brooks LMT, CLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am known more for my deep tissue work and trying to custom-tailor massages to each and every one of my clients. It’s my understanding that my ability to serve each of my clients is limited to the amount that I see them. My goal is to arm them with activities to go home with and extra support so that they are able to daily work on the chronic issues that plague them. I think what sets me apart from others is I truly care and try to ask questions to clearly define and meet the needs of each of my clients as they see it. It’s important to understand the goal of each session. This is also true in my life coaching practice. It’s super important for me to understand that it’s not my wisdom that I’m drawing from in life coaching. I’m drawing from the infinite wisdom that each of my clients is designed with. When you walk in two sessions with me, it’s about you. Your goals, your feelings, your aspirations, and how I can support you in that journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I laugh sometimes, because in my personal life, I feel like I’ve only ever had bad luck, but that can’t possibly be true. In my career as a massage, therapist and life coach I have had amazing serendipity to meet people to have furthered my career. I was able to work with professional football players as a result of my connections. I was able to work with countless firefighters and generally good people as a result of fortuitous connections. I can’t say one moment defined good luck or bad luck, but I can say having the connection to work with professional athletes really improved my marketability as a deep tissue massage therapist.
