Today we’d like to introduce you to Kwame Agyei.
Hi Kwame, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always had a passion for music ever since the time I could walk. My father was a DJ in Brooklyn for a time until we moved to Columbus, where he also continued his DJ skills. I grew up listening to Biggie Smalls, Tupac, Whitney Houston, Mahalia Jackson, Michael Jackson, 50 Cent, Wu-Tang, Kofi Nti, and many more! My favorite artist growing up was Michael Jackson, and was devastated when I heard of his passing. I wrote my first song when I was 15 about glorifying God. I never wrote another song until about 6 years later. I was playing around, making music, and rapping over beats with friends. I started making a few songs with them, and they pushed me to seriously give it a try! One of the first songs I made became a hit between my friends and some colleges. That’s when I decided to go all the way! Win or go home became my mentality after that! I’ve only officially started a year ago but have made some progress so far! I have a song with Sauce Walka coming out soon. Not sure if I’m gonna drop that first or my debut album with Atl Jacob, though! Stay tuned
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been smooth lol. Being an independent artist is great, but it gets challenging sometimes when it comes to finances. Buying the beats, studio time, flights, hotels, covers, etc gets a little expensive. Knowing that all the hard work and sleepless nights you put into the music can one day pay off to a great success is definitely worth it!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a music artist/rapper by the name of YKB Kwam. I have been in the music business briefly for about a year now, and my first performance was opening up for Dev The Dude with my group! I started a group called YKB (Young King’s Business), and we performed at Skully’s a couple of times. Was also invited back for the Iced Out 614 showcase. Since then, I have made a song with Sauce Walka called Street Gospel, which I will be releasing on all platforms before the summer of 2023. I have also met some of the rappers that I listen to on a daily basis: Damedot, Doe Boy, and Sauce Walka. Hopefully, I’ll get some features from the other two as well soon lol. I think as an independent and upcoming artist, one of my proudest achievements is having an album with Grammy Award-Winning Atl Jacob. It’s a blessing to be able to be in connection with him and have my debut album to be produced by him and Kobi! Stay tuned for the release date and some upcoming singles from the album!
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I definitely have to give thanks and praise to God for getting me this far in life and my music career. Without Him, it definitely would’ve been overwhelming. I also have to thank my mentor Gerald, who I consider to be an older brother! He’s always encouraging me to become the best version of myself and to strive no matter what! One of the songs on my debut album is inspired by him! My friends, loved ones, and supporters have also been a part of my success so far. Knowing that people actually enjoy my music is inspiring and motivates me to continue to make more!
