Today we’d like to introduce you to Keezy Thee Unkind
Hi Keezy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Starting out I wrote poetry..I don’t know if a lot of people know that about me. My father rest in peace was a DJ in Lima,OH (my hometown) & growing up music was sort of instilled in me. All kinds of music from rap to pop to rock to R&B. I would always freestyle with him and he would help me turn my poems into bars, he taught me what a cadence is, and how important it is, especially being a female artist and trying to rap. So after he passed I decided I had to do music full time to more so prove to him and myself that we did it, mind you I was doing spoken word pieces and poetry for middle schoolers up until I graduated from high school. I built a following in high school and was able to open up for Lil Uzi with 107.5, heard my song on the radio twice before I turned 18, opened up for Montana of 300 (twice), Lil reece, Dj Luke nasty etc. I was creating and dropping music but I feel like I took it extremely serious 2019. I had lost my job, went through a bad break up, living with my mom, trying to make nothing out of something. I had started a record label back in 2015, with one of my old friends, and I wanted to rebrand the label and take it all the way there. On top of creating my own lane as an artist, funding it. I trusted the process, worked 45+ hours a week, & started my journey as an artist. Once I got on my feet I hit the floor running, shooting videos, having the opportunity to travel and do shows locally and out of state. I was able to get into rooms I would have never thought I could get in..& getting paid. Now I have 5 artist on my label, an entire team to help manage the artists so that I have more time to focus on my craft and creativity. Ive headlined my own shows on my own now, being able to create moments not only for myself but for the people around me is the most rewarding part. My team is my family, so even mixing family with business could seem like a risk but in my eyes it’s the only thing that makes sense. Im nowhere where I want to be, but I’m far from where I started.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all, I mean everyone’s journey is different, but we all go through things. My biggest struggle was my mental. When things aren’t going as fast as you’d like, or if your just having a rough day and thinking the worst it can’t throw your whole mindset off, I stopped dropping music for 2 years so that I could learn about the music business, mixing and mastering, shooting videos, editing etc. I knew my energy wasn’t good enough to record but I had to stay focused and expand my mind. I just stayed locked in and kept learning.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Im a female artist. I create music and curate vibes. I specialize in writing and recording music. Im known for having good music. It shocks people when I play them my music..which is crazy to me but I always love hearing everyone’s reaction. Im most proud of the growth in my music. if you were to listen to my older music and compare it to my music now you can definitely hear the difference..in a good way. I think what sets me apart is the level of understanding I have when it comes to the industry and music business aspect. I can have mature conversations and then turn into an artist and relax and have fun. The love and passion I have for the music is different compared to anyone else. The one person I wanted to do this music with is gone, I have no choice but to go harder. Its just different.
What were you like growing up?
As a kid I loved sports and WWE. I played every sport you can think of up until my sophomore year of high school, & I really enjoyed wrestling. I faithfully watched Monday night Raw, Smackdown, literally all of it.
