Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Myrick.
Hi Katrina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Made by Myrick:
I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. Art, Fashion, and Design have always been a part of my life. Since an early age, I’ve always had a creative ability to see things from an artistic and unique perspective. My 1st time at an Art Gallery, I fell in love with Jean-Michel Basquiat’s art, his artistic style of blurring the lines with figuration and abstraction, his vision, just overall everything. I later discovered Tamara de Lempicka and her work with red lips, beauty, art, fashion, and this new world opened for me.
Growing up, I would always style, design, and create items for my family and friends, whether for their homes or for fashion; I have always been a true artist by nature.
In 2014 while living in Atlanta, I told someone that creating was my passion, and he helped me land an interior staging job for the model unit in my local sub-division. From there, my passion, love, and admiration for art, designing and creating flourished. I picked up interior design/staging jobs on the side to help gain knowledge and experience, and as a way to cut cost and efficiency, I started making artwork for the units, and the artist in me arose! Then, one day I posted my artwork online and shared my gift with the world, and here I am.
Art, to me, is simply an extension of personality. Art to me is subjective & objective, and most importantly to me; Art is therapeutic. I’ve always had anxiety, and art and creating has always been my therapeutic outlet. Art is my way to express my emotions, increase my creativity and reduce/manage my stress. Nowadays, I am creating art, starting my Art Therapy classes, and living in my purpose and passion. My dream is to open an art gallery and practice art therapy sessions to help others manage their stress, anxiety, depression, or simply to extend their creative knowledge. Art thru the canvas of my soul physically and metaphorically is my creation to you.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey of Made by Myrick has not been easy, but it has been a road filled with passion discovery, joy, discouragement, optimism, self-reflection, learning experiences, trial and errors, a plethora of increased knowledge, opportunities to meet other amazing artists and business owners, therapy sessions, a way to strength my relationship with my mother, who is my biggest supporter, a blueprint for my son Zachary, my family & friends to start their own business and a spiritual guiding force that led me learn & practice meditation, sound bathing, sage smudging, and art therapy.
The road has been difficult but worthwhile. Novelist James Lane Allen said it best “Adversity does not build character; it reveals it.” There has been times where I wanted to give up, questioned my worth and work, I have stopped and started and prayed and started again, and with faith, I have maintained and overcome all obstacles before me. In my transition from Atlanta to Cincinnati, I’ve had to literally start from the ground up again. I have to make all new connections, establish myself apply for local art shows, and hustle harder than ever, but I am up for the challenge, humble, thankful, and grateful for the opportunity to do so.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Personality, creativity, and individuality sets me apart from others. My style is fresh, innovative, fun and unique. More contemporary than modern and innovatively chic. My art is abstract, crystal-infused geode, resin epoxy, acrylic pouring, gems, rhinestones, texture, bold colors, 3D. Swarovski stones, daily items around your home, you name it, I’ve probably tried it incorporate it in my creations a time or two.
I don’t just specialize in artwork. I create handmade home décor, furniture, wedding décor, artistic luxury candles, memorial & photo keepsake candles, positive affirmation coasters, wearable art handbags, sculptures, sage, and CBD-infused candle wax melts. Outside of my artwork, I am most known for my candles and sculptures.
I am most proud of an artwork piece I made in honor of my late grandmother who had Dementia and Alzheimer’s. I entered the piece in a silent auction for an Art Gallery in Dayton (Ohio) dedicated to Dementia/Alzheimer’s. Although my artwork did not make it into their gallery, it was an honor.
Currently, I am focused on my artwork, candles and scultures for art shows, networking locally in the state, meeting other fellow artists, getting an Art mentor, starting art therapy classes and increasing my onlne social media presence.
What does success mean to you?
It is not only a goal you set for yourself, but what you do and how you do it.
Success is feeling good with the person you are, your integrity, your beliefs, and how you feel about what you do to meet your goals.
Success to me is more than an accomplishment. Some people accomplish a level of success and compromise their integrity and value.
