Meet Kacie Gikonyo of Death Doula School

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kacie Gikonyo

Hi Kacie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My Journey to Becoming a Death Doula

My story began with my nursing career. Initially, I went to nursing school with the intention of working in OB and delivering babies. However, my first job was in Long Term Care, and I quickly discovered that my true passion was not in helping babies labor into this world, but in helping adults labor out of it.

During my time on the frontlines of COVID-19 as an Infection Control RN, I witnessed hundreds of deaths in a short span of time. This intense experience crystallized my calling to help people die better. Fast forward 4.5 years, and I now own my own Death Doula practice and am the Founder of Death Doula School, a comprehensive training program for those who wish to become Death Doulas.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t think there’s any entrepreneur who easily sails through without any bumps in the road. Running a business is hard. Running a business that revolves around death and changing the narrative around it is even harder! A significant part of my work involves educating the public about death, Death Doulas, and the crucial role we play in end-of-life support. However, talking about death isn’t always well received, and this has been an ongoing hurdle. Despite this, I continue to push forward because I believe deeply in the importance of what I’m doing. Everyone will face death someday, and with the right knowledge, support, and education, people can experience more beautiful and meaningful deaths.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Death Doula School?
