Meet Jhazlyn Sanders

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jhazlyn Sanders.

Hi Jhazlyn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been a true advocate of candles and the energy of scent. I used to work in a high-stress environment and my daily unwind consisted of candles and a warm bath. I would burn through mainstream candles within a day or two, spending in upwards of $100 a week on just candles. I notice my spend would be higher during peak times at work. When I thought about my favorite scents and how they made me feel, I began researching the different benefits of scent. I saw that mint was perfect to keep you awake and focused, while lavender relaxes you and compliments a time of resting. I saw the benefits of scent and began to create my own candles, specifically, with “the energy you crave”, in mind. I found a way to fuse both my love to create and love of candles into a business. A business that I am passionate about and utilize regularly in my self-care routine.

What’s next was inspired by a trip to a surrounding city. There I had the pleasure of making candles with some friends. As I plan for what’s next, I targeted unique areas that have walking traffic. The perfect candle pouring destination is a place where you pour and visit surrounding businesses while your candle sets. Wick Therapy Candle’s largest location is in the outdoor shopping center located at The Greene in Beavercreek, Ohio. With over 100+ scents the candle bar includes a range of “do it yourself” projects that include candle making, scrub making, and room spray making. The team helps you find the perfect scent combinations, and a party room to accommodate larger or private parties.

Downtown Dayton is the home of our second location. Nestled in the 2nd Street Market the candle bar has become popular among the Downtown community. It uniquely holds up to 40 single scents and an area to make your own custom scents. We have added room sprays to accommodate no open flame clauses.

As I take a look at what is next, I would like to continue to participate in local festivals and trade shows, and in search of a 3rd location. There is no better feeling than taking something that you love to do and utilizing your personal and professional skills to see it grow and develop into something worth the hard work. I look forward to continuing to be of service to the community and providing a candle pouring destination and place to create memories.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There have been some ups and downs mainly driven by COVID. The store front opened the November before the world shut down. 1) The marketing strategy rested mainly on the events planned at The Greene. This was essential to bringing awareness to the store front. It created a way to engage and have face-to-face connectivity with current and future guests. With COVID this strategy quickly dissipated. 2) Due to the world shutting down buying habits changed and migrated to online. At the time, the online platform was not ready to capture the potential sales driven by the COVID surge. 3) Lastly while everyone was confined to home, the entrepreneurial spirit took over and candle-making became one of the fastest-growing small businesses. This influx of candle businesses led to an increase in supply and demand within the vendor network and drove an increase raw material pricing.

Post-COVID things are beginnings to level out. Supply constraints are starting to subside, and the hobby-turned-business has phased out for some.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have a Master’s degree with a concentration in Project Management. Throughout my professional career, I have maintained leadership roles in Fortune 500 Companies since graduating with my undergraduate degree. I intentionally pursue roles in sales, this provides me the ability to acquire transferrable skills that I have been able to cultivate in both the personal and professional settings. In the last 3 years, I have been in Category Management, in this role you are building stories to understand shopper behaviors and buying habits. Learning these patterns has been a tremendous help in understanding consumers. This is my superpower, understanding and interpreting data to execute based on what is going on in the market.
