Meet Jennifer Cuevas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Cuevas.

Jennifer Cuevas

Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My passion for all things beauty started at a very young age. My mom is and always was a beauty. From the way she dressed to her hair to her confidence, I was always inspired to protrude that sort of beauty in my life. When I was a teenager in high school, I quickly found enjoyment in doing my own makeup. I would spend hours of my free time just practicing different looks and challenging myself with different artistic techniques.

By the time I was 19, my now husband, Nick, and I were expecting our first baby girl. As anyone could expect, having a baby at 19 years old means we needed to work. We needed to grind and provide for our daughter and the life we wanted for her. Years go by, raising our daughter together and life goes by so quickly, I never imagined makeup being a priority in these times. My husband, on the other hand, always encouraged me to start doing makeup. Fast forward (9 years later), Nick and I have built a strong foundation for ourselves. We’ve expanded our family, made a house into a home, and planted all the right roots for our family. In 2023, Nick and I made the decision for me to be a stay-at-home Mom and focus more of my attention on our children. This also raised the question of, “What do you WANT to do, not what do you NEED to do?” Something not many people have in life, and I am extremely grateful I have this opportunity.

When I thought more into this question, the only thing I could imagine was finally doing what I always wanted. Building a business and brand for myself that inspires women to feel confident and beautiful.

I had extreme reservations, doubts, and fears before starting this journey, but I am so glad I did. With the support of my husband, family, and friends, I feel this was the best move I could have made. I’m extremely proud of myself and I’m so excited to see where this journey takes me!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes and no.

Entrepreneurship is never a smooth road. There’s finances, there’s scheduling, self-marketing, and SO much more that goes into building your own brand, on top of being a wife and mother. I think building a brand while being a full-time and present mother, the mental load that comes with that is difficult. But I also think about the long-term benefits for not only myself but my kids, and I am grateful I can even do this at all.

I think I’ve learned how to be grateful for the opportunities in life more than focusing on the negative aspects of it, and that is what keeps me afloat. If I were to focus on the negatives and the things that don’t quite work out to my benefit, I would have never even started this journey.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I personally specialize in more of a neutral glam and makeup artistry. Within makeup, all makeup artists have their niche. Whether that be special effects, artsy glam, etc. I personally say my niche is from a more natural approach. Using the makeup to enhance the features of your face rather than completely changing how you look.

What I am most proud of is that I get to do this entire journey from a foundation of gratitude and passion. Yes, this is my business, and I take it very, very seriously, but it is not entirely money-driven. I would crazy to say I don’t want to get compensated for my efforts, but my makeup endeavor is completely passion-driven, and I absolutely love that.

Thus far, my proudest moment was working with Nikkie Brown, Miss Northern Ohio, in her foundation for Project Model for a Day. PMFAD is a non-profit organization that strives to give young girls the opportunity to feel beautiful for the day. It is an entire photo shoot and experience dedicated to that young girl. Everything is donated, from the photography, makeup, wardrobe, venue, etc. And being part of something so beautiful, that has definitely been the most rewarding part of my journey so far!

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the COVID-19 crisis?
Time management! During COVID-19, I juggled being a full-time mother, full-time employee, home-schooling my daughter, and just having a newborn baby! All of that, all at one time, it was definitely a mentally challenging time, but we made it through!
