Meet Janine Laughlin of Healthy Core Wellness & Rehab

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janine Laughlin.

Janine Laughlin

Hi Janine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I left my hospital position in 2009 to start Healthy Core Wellness & Rehab; to offer holistic solutions with a full-body approach to bridge the gap between orthopedics and pelvic health. Initially, I went to patient’s homes with my massage table and equipment, but after 9 months, I settled into a space that I shared with a friend who was a massage therapist. Within a year, our practice exploded, and I hired administrative staff and a full-time physical therapist, requiring us to move to a larger space where we stayed for 3 years before moving to our current location.

Since starting the practice 15 years ago, I expanded my training and manual therapy skills to include advanced visceral mobilization (myofascial release around organs and deeper layers), Integrative Dry Needling, vacuum cupping, percussion, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, kinesiotaping and more recently, vagus nerve regulation. Because of the nature of our work, using our hands and being one-on-one with each patient, we hired and trained two excellent physical therapists in the Healthy Core method in order to help more people. Along with treating patients and clients, we empower and educate individuals in the community with our blog, local workshops, and our social media (IG and FB).

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Besides moving the clinic three times, we have been many challenges along the way. Did I mention my children were 3, 7, and 10 at the time I started the business? Trying to balance work and home life with school and sports schedules was one of them. Hiring the right people was another. I have had a few impulsive hires but have since built a great working team. The other challenges involved being paid (or not paid) by third parties (insurance companies) and having patients not pay their bill. The financial challenges have probably been the most difficult. We switched to an electronic medical record (EMR), which was a learning curve for everyone. Diagnostic codes changed to ICD-10, and we had more to learn. Fortunately, my husband Brian took over not only childcare on his days off from the fire department but also managing the front office, bookkeeping, and being our IT and handyman. He painted our clinics and moved us all three times.

Physical therapists are highly skilled at treatment but not always at running a business. We like to support other entrepreneurs and have utilized business coaching and other professionals to help us navigate business decisions. It is definitely a learning curve.
