Meet Janicka Harris of Kairos Wellness LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janicka Harris

Hi Janicka, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey into public health entrepreneurship began organically, nurtured by engaging in community-driven efforts. Witnessing firsthand my father’s dedication to service and improving the socio-economic and health status of communities, securing vital grants and funding for equitable initiatives in rural Florida instilled in me a profound appreciation for the power of resource mobilization. These early experiences, marked by community meetings with faith-based organizations and absorbing discussions on coalition-building and funding strategies, ignited a lifelong passion for creating meaningful change. This laid the foundation for my professional trajectory, which formally commenced at the tender age of 15 through a youth employment program at a law enforcement agency. While youthful reservations about entering the workforce may have momentarily surfaced, the opportunity to contribute to my diverse communities was my primary calling. The financial independence this employment afforded me further fueled my entrepreneurial spirit. Under the guidance of a distinguished professor at the University of Michigan at the time, I wanted to dive more into the realm of public health practice, research, and creative writing that would benefit community based businesses such as non-profit organizations.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey, while deeply rewarding, has had many struggles along the way. The path to entrepreneurship is rarely linear, and I’ve faced numerous challenges along the way. The loss of loved ones and dear friends has undoubtedly left an indelible mark, while navigating toxic work environments characterized by bullying and micromanagement has presented significant obstacles. Working in workplaces with varying dynamics also taught me that many people have personal issues, and they may project them onto others; not take things personally. Perhaps the most persistent struggle has been securing clients who truly value the intersection of design, community impact, and sustainability, particularly those who appreciate the power of creative storytelling and impactful graphics. Lastly, this journey has taught me a valuable, albeit difficult, lesson: not every individual considered a friend is inherently obligated to support my entrepreneurial endeavors. The realization that kindness and positivity can sometimes be met with indifference or even hostility was particularly challenging to accept. It became clear that my optimistic outlook, while a driving force, could inadvertently make others feel uncomfortable or threatened.

We’ve been impressed with Kairos Wellness LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Kairos Wellness LLC, we believe in seizing the “right time” for positive health impact, a philosophy deeply rooted in the Greek word “Kairos.” As a virtual public health consulting firm, we’re a team of dedicated professionals, including public health practitioners and sociologists, committed to improving community well-being. We offer a unique “one-stop shop” approach, providing comprehensive services including fundraising through grant writing, data-driven insights through tailored assessments, and impactful storytelling to effectively communicate your message. Our expertise extends beyond traditional consulting, encompassing non-profit leadership, project management, marketing, and technology integration. We pride ourselves on our integrity, resourcefulness, and a proven track record of helping organizations increase their operational budgets to sustain and expand vital health programs. For example, we secured over $350,000 in grant funding through tailored fundraising efforts for a reproductive health non-profit organization in South Florida. We are most proud of our recent feature in WTXL ABC 27 News about our 2024 Maternal Health Survey Results Infographic that offered insights into the needs and challenges of birthing people of color in Tallahassee, Florida. Review the news article here: https://www.wtxl.com/southwest-tallahassee/southwest-neighbors-use-survey-for-better-black-maternal-health; and View the infographic here: https://tinyurl.com/mwdtk2nd.

We are equally excited about our ability to create products such as our launch of our new e-book in November 2024 titled, Housing for Health: Grant Writing & Real Estate. The e-book shares tips on writing grant applications for housing initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes. It includes a list of innovative housing and placemaking initiatives, sample project management templates such as evaluation plans, budget worksheets and more. It may also serve as a housing crisis prevention tool. Our e-book can be downloaded on Lulu at the website here: https://www.lulu.com/shop/janicka-d-harris/housing-for-health-grant-writing-and-real-estate/ebook/product-dyj99vv.html?q=&page=1&pageSize=4. We will be offering an online Housing for Health course for anyone interested to learn about how to write grants in this field of work. It will include an overview of the social determinants of health like access to healthcare, built environment (e.g., safe, affordable housing) and writing to win grant application tips.

Another product is our survey toolkit that helps state Medicaid agencies with assessing behavioral health (mental health) services in their region. This will support federal CMS guidance on community-based waivers and behavioral health. Whether you’re an entrepreneur launching a new venture or a non-profit seeking to maximize its impact, Kairos Wellness is your partner in achieving lasting, positive change.

How do you think about happiness?
Many things bring me happiness, and it all starts with my inner world. My spirituality plays a crucial role, and practicing gratitude daily – expressing appreciation for the good in my life – cultivates a positive outlook. I find immense joy in personal growth, particularly through reading leadership and relationship-building books. This helps me navigate diverse personalities and build strong, positive connections with others. Exploring different cultures, both domestically and internationally, is incredibly enriching. And, as an avenue for self-expression, I find deep satisfaction in pursuing editorial and magazine modeling – a form of artistic expression that allows me to connect with my emotions and share them with the world.
