Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Lamerson.
Hi Heidi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in a small village just south of Chillicothe. Our area is very poverty-stricken and opioid-ridden, and I’ve always been a firm believer in the spaces around you mold who you are; so I started muraling. First, it started out just as logos for businesses, but slowly it has started developing into more than that as time progresses. I graduated high school, took a year at OU, took a gap year to work at Disney, lost two incredibly important people to me in untimely accidents. After staying home another semester to build myself back up again, Covid hit right in time for my first semester back as a transfer student at CCAD that fall. A year and a half of online schooling later, I have really grown to appreciate making the space around you an environment rather than just a space to exist, but rather an area to thrive. I am getting ready to graduate with a BFA in Illustration and a minor in Advertising & Graphic Design, and could not be more excited for what my future holds!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I ended up herniating one of my lower discs in my back last spring, and it has affected my abilities and my body ever since. I still struggle with mobility for muraling but have since turned it into an awesome opportunity to contract out other artists around my age to help me bring a vision to life. They get experience on a cool project, a space is beautified, everyone gets paid, and I get to go home feeling like I’ve made a difference, despite my mobility challenges.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve really become a Jack of all trades but master of none. I do all kinds of services under my independent LLC- PSYCHEDELINK. I do branding, some marketing, ads, CAD and package design, industrial design, Snapchat geofilters, murals, illustrations, logos, and much more. I’m open to learning new odd jobs and dipping my toes in just about anything you approach me with. I love learning new ways to bring creativity to life, especially when a client may struggle doing that by themselves. I am currently most known for my collaboration with clothing brand SHEIN and ROMWE, as well as my murals around my hometown. I really enjoy making patterns and engineered design for things such as t-shirts, pants, and other articles of clothing.
I think something that makes me unique from other artists is that I have such a diverse skill set to offer clients. I also have a huge desire to learn and uplift other artists around me. The art market is competitive in the way that it pushes you to do better for yourself and your surrounding communities.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
Surprisingly, I don’t really have much time (or much of an attention span) to consume a whole lot of media. I have taken several incredibly useful classes here at the Columbus College of Art & Design that has given me amazing connections with my peers and professors as a professional creative. While you don’t need a degree to be an artist, I do recommend soaking in any and all information you receive from others. I largely listen to a ton of music and create based on that style.
