Meet Eric Back of Cincinnati Handyman Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Back.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story began when I was about 8 or 9 helping my father with his rental properties. Even though I was pretty young, when I was at work, I was at work. I can thank him for instilling a good work ethic I carry to this day… Maybe the jobs weren’t as big and the pay was definitely wasn’t great, but it’s where I started my passion for wanting to build and fix everything. It’s where I learned doing my best was important and finishing what I started was even more important. My friends would always ask where I got all this money and I would say from work. Kinda laughable when you are 9, but nothing in my household was given to me, if you want it, you have to go get it!

During my teen years I went to a building trades school along with my standard high school classes. I worked for a few small construction companies in my hometown of Brookville Indiana. I thought I knew so much back then, it’s kinds funny how little I knew when I look back. By the time I was 19, I decided to go to NKU for construction management. Who would have thought 2007 would be a bad year to get into construction… Nearing graduation one of the best programs in the area was struggling to fill its classes. I took on lower-skilled construction jobs as a maintenance technician and doing construction for a small office rental company. Still hoping the market would improve and I could be a project manager. I was offered a job doing handyman work part-time for a handyman company we rented to at the small office space. Not too long after I launched my own company and quite my job. That was a scary time, make it or break it, as they would say! One of my old bosses told me I would make it one month before I came back begging for my job. Well, I can pleasantly say, a decade later, I never looked back. Some of my friends have offered me construction management jobs but I have always declined. I love the people I meet and the creative jobs I have had the opportunity to work on. I feel lucky every day I get to do what I love.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Much like everything, it gets easier with time. The first few years of running my company was a struggle to say the least. Money, tools, time, and how to utilize your labor is easier said than done. Understanding all the ins and outs of running your own business can be a lot to learn. How to deal with difficult customers and resolve issues as they will always arise. How to make sure your business life and personal life have a clear division. The hardest part of being a small business owner is finding a good life balance. If I could look back give my old self some advice, it would be: stay VERY organized and find time for those you love!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Fishing with my father had to be one of my best childhood memories. It was mostly about bragging right, but sometimes the cheapest and most simple things are what we look back at being the most important. It was always a contest and no one in my family gave up to easily. Whether it was the new secret bait recipe or lure, there was always competition. At the heart of it, past the bragging and picking on each other, it was about the time we spent together. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
