Meet Emil Fischer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emil Fischer.

Hi Emil, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started martial arts in the early 90s and started jiu-jitsu in 1999. After training off and on for about 12 years I moved to Cleveland in 2011 to assume the role of vice president of marketing and sales at Ion Vacuum Technologies Corporation, a Warrensville Heights based PVD coating company.

While working at Ion Vacuum Technologies I also ramped up my training and competition schedule as a grappler going from beginner to three time Panamerican champion and 2 division Fight2Win champion.

I currently train at Strong Style MMA in Independence and teach at Ararat Martial Arts and Fitness in Warrensville Heights.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I moved back to Cleveland to train the path was a bit rocky, the first three gyms I landed at weren’t a good fit. When I finally found Strong Style things clicked and I really started advancing as a competitor.

Balancing work with training and teaching can sometimes be challenging as well. Most grapplers of my caliber have fewer responsibilities in their lives and can devote more time and energy to their athletic careers. I make do with what I’ve got and am constantly seeking to improve.

Covid was of course a major hurdle, and having to take time off and curtail my training schedule negatively impacted my competitive career.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a competitor, I am best known for my whimsical approach. I prefer to go down the path less taken because I feel it is more fun and I feel it gives me a competitive edge.

As an instructor, I am known for attention to detail and teaching unorthodox technical combinations.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Set goals that you know for a fact you can reach and crush them. Far too often I see people set goals that are completely out of their hands and then they get discouraged when they fail to reach their goals. Instead, set definite goals that are completely within your control and work on those. You’ll find your success will come faster and you will be surprised at the levels you are able to reach.
