Today we’d like to introduce you to David Driskill
Hi David, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I got my start as a creative actually in church and elementary school. I was really involved in choirs, plays, musicals, concerts, etc… which led to my love for acting, music, and editing. I went to school for music and after I graduated, I moved to LA to pursue music and acting. Now that I think about it, everything I’ve done up to this point involved a camera whether it was taking a photo or video but it wasn’t until I moved back to Cincinnati that I wanted to pick up a camera professionally and learn as much as I could. Initially, it was just a hobby but the more I learned, the more I wanted to turn it into a business. So I started doing photography first and took a lot of classes at YU (Youtube University), then I fell in love with the art of storytelling through video and editing which is how I built my business DRSKL Productions LLC. We do photography, videography, editing, launched a clothing line, and now (you heard it hear first) script writing. I’ve been blessed to gain a handful of clients from across several industries (real estate, podcasting, content creators, etc…) and still growing day by day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There is nothing smooth about entrepreneurship or chasing a dream. I went from working a 9-5 with benefits to working what feels like 24 hours 6 days a week. The biggest struggle is being ghosted by clients or potential clients after I give them my rate. The communication just stops or they’ll try to talk me down from my rate. It’s really tough but I’ve learned that my rate saves me a lot of time to do things I enjoy, for example, spending time with my wife and son or doing street photography. Another struggle is managing my time. I have a strict ‘no working at home unless absolutely necessary’ rule I give myself. There are some exceptions, for example, I have a client who lives in LA and so due to the time difference, I’ll work at home.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do a lot of things. I act, sing/songwriting, musician, photographer, videographer, editing, among other things. Right now, I’m focused on photography, videography, and editing along with my clothing line DRSKL that I just relaunched in February. So I’m known for a lot of things but that’s my focus right now.
I am most proud of the relationships I’ve been able to build with while being on this creative journey. Some of my clients have become dear friends and the business has been able to still go strong because of the relationships I’ve built.
What sets me apart from others is not quitting and the willingness to keep going. I turned almost everything I love to do into a monetizable business and I’m able to provide for my family, travel the world, and still get to be a creative because I refuse to quit, and I’m just getting started. I’m about to go back into acting and music and still able to do everything else I love to do. There’s so much freedom in that and I’m very proud of that.
