Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Neish.
Hi Brittany, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Ever since I was a child, the people in my life were always the *magic* whether it was playing make-believe with my cousins or laughing at all my grandfather’s many jokes, it was never lost on me how powerful and important the relationships in my life were. It’s this innate value in connections that ultimately led me to create my business, What You Do Matters – as a positive platform for growth, powered by intentional action-taking in partnership with others. Keeping people at the heart of it all has been something I’ve been doing in every element of my life and career, so it was no surprise I wanted to build a business truly centered around this philosophy.
As I progressed throughout my professional life, taking on many different roles in Marketing, it was in being a people leader that I found my true calling. I loved being able to inspire, motivate and encourage my team to pursue what was most important or intriguing to them. It’s because of this that I wanted to be able to lean even more deeply into the development space. It started by offering career coaching, interview prep, and resume writing to young professionals outside of my 9 to 5 corporate work and then grew into running my own business as a side hustle that not only included coaching but also digital courses, team workshops, and personal growth tools like planners. Most recently, my personal and professional interests fully collided when I left my 12-year marketing career to fully lean into the learning and development space following my graduation from Case Western Reserve University with a Master of Science in Positive Organizational Development & Change.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It certainly has not been a smooth road! Every step of the way has presented challenges that have pushed me out of my comfort zone. The biggest hurdle I’ve had has been overcoming my own self-doubt and insecurities.
So many times I’ve questioned whether or not I have what it takes or if I know enough to be doing this, but it’s in those moments I’ve always grown stronger and more self-assured when I come out on the other side.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
What You Do Matters ignites the goals and dreams of women around the world through meaningful training, products, services, and community building. We are the spark that turns words into action so that women can make manifest their greatest dreams. Whether that dream is tackling her calendar, starting her very own non-profit, or amplifying diverse voices in her community.
We are known for our leadership philosophy of doing through intentional action – an action that is meaningful not only for the doer but also for those the doer engages with along the way. We teach this philosophy in coaching, workshops, digital courses, and personal growth tools like our planner!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I greatly believe in the power of risk-taking but I think the unsexy side of risk-taking isn’t talked about enough. The feeling you get right after you take a big risk where you aren’t sure if you made the right decision, you’re fully out of your comfort zone and you’re simply trying to hang on for dear life. To me, this is where the real beauty of risk-taking lies – in the uncomfortableness and confusion.
Throughout my life, I’ve taken many a risk – starting my own business, changing industries, and taking on roles that felt too big/too hard/complicated. It’s easy to DECIDE to take the risk, but I’ve found that it’s much harder to sit within that decision and really feel the weight of it. That’s where we gather the most learning about ourselves.
Ultimately, it all comes down to (in my opinion!) that there really never is a true “risk” it’s all chalked up to learning.
We’re signing up to learn something new and it may or may not be exactly what we thought it was going to be but it will teach us something along the way.
