Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Woods.
Hi Brett, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Brett Woods, and I’ve been a carpenter for more than 25 years. After spending two decades in the carpenters union, I reached a point where I knew something needed to change—there was a part of me that still felt unfulfilled.
At the end of 2019, I stepped away from the union to start my own construction business. The work came quickly—I was booked over a year out and even had to turn projects away—but even then, I still felt like something was missing. My wife, our three children, and I had also started a regenerative farm that was thriving, but during the slower winter months, I found myself searching for more.
I realized I needed to use my skills in a new way. In 2022, I invested in a CNC router, and that’s where everything clicked. Creating custom signs for family and friends brought me a joy I hadn’t felt in years. I discovered that my passion wasn’t just building—it was creating pieces that bring joy to others.
Three years later, this little dream has grown into a thriving business, and I couldn’t be more grateful. Every project, big or small, reminds me why I took this leap.
Looking ahead, my goal is to continue crafting custom signs, home décor, and furniture that make people smile. With my wife’s help, I’m working on building a website and getting everything organized to make the process simple and enjoyable for you.
I’m genuinely excited to help bring your ideas to life through woodworking. If you have something in mind, I’d love to hear it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most small businesses built from the ground up, the road hasn’t always been smooth. One of the biggest challenges has been choosing to run this business purely on cash flow. We made a commitment early on not to take out loans, which meant growing slowly, intentionally, and sometimes sacrificing speed for stability. Every tool, every piece of equipment, every upgrade—we paid for as we went. It wasn’t easy, but it taught us discipline and made each milestone feel earned.
Another challenge came in 2024 when we opened a storefront and woodshop in town. Our hope was to not only showcase our work, but also feature other local craftsmen in the community. Unfortunately, the building’s location didn’t bring in the walk-in traffic we hoped for, and later that year the landlord began considering selling the property. Rather than take on additional risk, we made the decision to move the woodshop back home.
While those transitions were tough, they helped shape who we are today. Our business has continued to grow authentically—through word of mouth, repeat customers, and the support we’ve received on social media. Even with the challenges, the journey has been worth every step.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Woods’Working, I specialize in creating custom wooden signs, home décor, and handcrafted furniture that blend skilled carpentry with meaningful artistic detail. With more than 25 years of carpentry experience—and the addition of CNC technology—I’m able to take an idea, whether it’s a sketch, a photo, a handwritten note, or a simple concept, and turn it into a personalized, one-of-a-kind piece.
I’m best known for detailed, high-quality sign work: crisp carving, clean finishing, and durable sealing that allows pieces to be enjoyed both indoors and outdoors. Each board is hand-selected, prepared, crafted, and finished with care. Whether it’s a family name sign, a business logo, a memorial piece, or a custom gift, the heart behind the work remains the same—to create something meaningful that brings joy to the person receiving it.
What I’m most proud of is not just the craftsmanship, but the purpose behind it. Our faith in Christ is the driving force of this business. We believe that the gifts we’ve been given are meant to be used to bless others, serve our community, and create with integrity. Every project is an opportunity to honor God through the work of our hands, and to bring a little light and joy into someone’s home.
What sets us apart is the combination of craftsmanship, authenticity, personal connection, and purpose. We don’t mass-produce; we custom-create with intention. From the design process to the final coat of varnish, every step is done with care, prayer, and a desire to reflect the excellence we believe God calls us to.
We’ve never relied on heavy advertising—our growth has come from word of mouth, returning customers, and the genuine support of our community. At the end of the day, our mission is simple: to bring someone’s ideas to life in a way that honors their story, reflects our faith, and showcases the beauty of craftsmanship.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
There are several ways people can partner with us, whether they’re looking for a custom project, hoping to collaborate, or simply wanting to support our small business.
1. Custom Orders
The easiest way to work with us is to reach out with your ideas. We love creating one-of-a-kind signs, home décor, memorial pieces, business logos, personalized gifts, and handcrafted furniture. Whether you have a clear vision or just a concept, we’ll work with you step-by-step to bring it to life.
2. Collaborative Projects
We’re always open to collaborating with local businesses, photographers, artisans, and makers. In the past, we’ve partnered with other craftsmen, created signage for small businesses, and worked with photographers on styled shoots. If you have a project in mind or want to create something together, we’d love to talk.
3. Supporting Us Online
A simple but powerful way to support us is by following, sharing, and engaging with our content on social media. Because our business has grown authentically—through word of mouth, relationships, and online support—every like, share, and comment truly helps us reach more people.
4. Referrals & Word of Mouth
If you’ve purchased from us or love what we do, sharing our name with friends, family, or coworkers means the world to us. Most of our growth has come from people telling others about their experience, and we are incredibly grateful for it.
5. Prayer & Encouragement
Since our faith in Christ is the foundation of our business, one of the most meaningful forms of support is prayer—praying for wisdom, provision, and the ability to use our gifts to serve others well. Encouraging messages or testimonials also help keep us motivated and grateful for the work we do.
6. Future Website
We are currently working on building a website to make browsing and ordering even easier. Once it launches, sharing it or sending people our way will be another great way to support us.
At Woods’Working, we’re committed to creating high-quality, meaningful pieces that bring joy. However you choose to support or collaborate with us, we don’t take it for granted—we truly appreciate every single person who believes in what we do.
