Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Michael Hall.
Hi Benjamin Michael, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a super small town in Texas nicknamed “Prison City.” It has the biggest population of prisons in one city!! So fun haha. I did theater as much as I could outside of school as we didn’t have a well funded program at the highschool I attended. I call it divine timing but I found my way to Ohio with BWMT through covid. I auditioned for 23 schools on zoom and somehow got into BW. Started a little photography business and have been working professionally both in theater and as a photographer for about 2 years now.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growing up in Texas definitely was a struggle. When I think about what made life difficult in college, I am reminded that it all kind of can from Texas? For example I had never taken music theory classes because they weren’t offered in my highschool, and same with photography. I wasn’t really able to afford private lessons for much but even if I could, the small town in Texas had very little to offer artistically.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m realistically an artist through and through. I’m sure that’s a terribly basic answer but I really am. I guess the heart of what I do is connecting, and I do that through theater, and photography. I do a shit ton of self portraits that are usually so personal that I end up having to scrap a lot of what I want to say about it and let the photos speak for themselves. I think I’m most proud of being able to do professional full time theater while also being a full time student. I believe that it is my work ethic and drive that separates me from others.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m moving to the big city! NYC. Terrifyingly exciting.
