Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Nelson
Hi Ashley, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a mom of five, and a full-time grad student operating a consulting business. I have my bachelor’s degree and am working towards my master’s in Clinical Mental Health. I started working as the office manager at a local counseling & consulting practice and quickly learned there was so much more I could be doing and learning. I took every opportunity to expand my knowledge and skill base and with the support of the owners of the counseling practice, took the leap to start my own consulting practice related to private practice/behavioral health. Divergent Billing & Consulting was founded in March 2024. I provide consulting, education, billing/credentialing training, and services. Basically, everything you may need to start a private practice or bring your practice to an efficient, effective level of performance. Starting Divergent Billing & Consulting, I wanted to encapsulate who I am as a person while setting an example for my children that nothing can stop you! I am an Autistic woman who has achieved a lot in my life so far through hard work and perseverance. I wanted to show my children that even though we may have hurdles in life, we can learn, grow, and do so much more than we realize! DBC highlights that for me! My company motto is “From complexity to clarity”. I believe through my neurodivergence, I am able to view the world in an usual way that allows me to take difficult tasks and simplify them so that it is easy for everyone to understand. I love what I do and want to share the knowledge with others!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I deal with chronic health issues that have made life a bit harder at times. I was diagnosed in 2017 with thyroid cancer, then in more recent years, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome(POTS) and Fibromyalgia. Throughout all of this, I have worked, gained a bachelor’s degree, and cared for my children to the best of my ability. Life doesn’t slow down and stop because we would like it to so I have made the best of my circumstances and found things to love, learn, and experience. I do many things out of a passion to achieve more, to give my children the best lives that I can, and to set an example for them that nothing is out of reach.

I like to think of myself as a calculated risk-taker! I like to plan and research any prospective adventure, especially related to my finances but in many fields, you can only research so much! Launching Divergent Billing & Consulting was a calculated risk that has already shown there is a need for services like mine in our area. There isn’t a manual for how to navigate starting your own practice and many who have already done it are “hush-hush” about it. That’s where I step in and do what I can to help your business thrive! Risks can be so rewarding. Sometimes we just have to take the leap and hope that there are those around us who can offer support when needed. I like to be that helping hand.
