Meet Anisa Shomo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anisa Shomo.

Hi Anisa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey started after I began learning more about the importance of healing from trauma in order to live longer. As a family doctor, I help people overcome difficult times in their lives. I understand the connection between mind and body. I know that stress can raise your blood pressure and it can cause cardiac events. Most people know this as well. The new aspect of what I learned: chronic stress and trauma can change your DNA expression. This change in DNA expression can lead to cancer, lung disease, heart disease, etc. When I learned this, I was in treatment for stage 1 cancer. Thus, I went on a journey to learn how to heal myself emotionally. That is when I started the brand: Health is Love TM. This brand is about starting your healing journey. We have a book, podcast, and we will be releasing an online course soon.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The COVID-19 pandemic affected my ability to have a book release and book tour. This caused me to pivot and create an online course. I also started to reflect on some of the things that keep us from healing. We have many societal issues that keep the trauma coming. This year, I have used my podcast to discuss some of the social justice issues that we encounter in our healing journey. We need to heal ourselves, our tribes, and our villages in order to be whole.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a writer and a family doctor. I specialize in caring for older adults. I am a geriatrician. My passion for helping people heal from trauma stems from my love of older adults. They are fearless, funny, caring, grateful, honest, and inspiring. These are qualities that I value. I wish to be an older adult someday but I live by these values now. I use these same qualities to help young people learn how to heal and live longer. I want for us all to be thriving older adults someday.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The industry for writers has been the same forever. It is about creating healing spaces for people to see reflections of themselves and examples of how to move forward despite all of the heartbreak that is in our past. That may be in book clubs, workshops, events, etc. We create space for healing each other.
