Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Omoruyi-Odierna.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi, my name is Amy Omoruyi-Odierna RN. I’m also popularly known and addressed as Nurse Amy. I am an RN of 22 years, a Zumba instructor, a Life coach, a Nurse educator, a Filmmaker, an author, and an avid women empowerment advocate. I am a nurturer and a pay-it-forward do-gooder. I believe in self-care and constant check-ins with our mental selves. I love to be part of people’s journeys to what makes them whole and happy. It’s a wonderful feeling and a blessing
I own and run GlamCare Academy Body & Beauty Studio; a health and wellness spa that utilizes non-surgical methods to help clients achieve their body, beauty, health, and wellness goals. We are located in downtown Xenia, Ohio. A picturesque town was full of kind and hospitable people. I have worked in varied areas of health care as a direct nurse and in management positions from the hospital to home health, to long-term care, to working with special needs individuals to teaching as a nurse educator in a nursing school and as a private CNA & nursing prep tutor
Getting into this particular niche of business was informed by my quest for alternative treatments in managing chronic pain that I incurred in my many years of nursing.
A short story; when I first started out in my career in nursing, I worked as a treatment nurse as part of a team but very quickly, I might add, became a one-man team lead wound nurse. That’s how I got hurt; I was literarily bending into a pretzel while treating patients because, as it’s common knowledge, the healthcare system is rife with short staffing, so there was no one to assist me as I carried out my duties, and I got hurt by not utilizing proper body mechanics (a feat impossible when you are the only one doing your job lol)
Anyway, fast forward to many years later, it became increasingly difficult for me to perform direct nursing care because of the excruciating pain in my back and leg. Sometimes I am in so much pain, that I could not carry my own work bag and walk at the same time. My colleagues would have to assist me to my car. A sight to see.
In 2017, for 2 months I could not walk! Surgery was an option presented to us however I was also told it was a 50/50 chance of success. Needless to say, neither my doctor, family nor myself were excited by that information. So, my husband and I started to explore alternative ways to get relief. For anyone who lives with any kind of chronic pain, I’m sure you know what I am talking about. It is no fun!
I did physical therapy, where I learned a very effective exercise that gives me instant relief by opening up my pelvis, I am eternally grateful to the PT assistant who helped me. I also did traction and other “popping type stuff” with chiropractor services, I tried acupuncture, massages, etc. The goal was to harden or strengthen my core. I had to wear a brace and limp my way across the floor at work.
Now, before this time I had started to work on an escape plan to vacate direct nursing. I had researched businesses that I could get into that will not put so much wear and tear on my joints and body as a whole. I had always been fascinated and interested in aesthetics and anti-aging and wellness-type things. I started the business with lash extensions and cosmetic teeth whitening and in my quest to find creative ways to achieve a stronger core I stumbled on non-surgical ways to reduce fat, alleviate pain, etc, without having to live at the gym for 24 hours!
I started to research nonstop and apply the techniques, tools, and products that can help me in my journey. I found relief and started training in different services so I can in turn help others that might be in my shoes. In my research, I also delved more, into studying the lymphatic system and how it can affect all parts of our health and the importance of water.
I also realized that a lot of the treatments I used on myself also help with weight loss and anti-aging; hence began my journey into the body, beauty, aesthetics, and wellness sphere. I believe in a totally holistic approach to health, beauty, body goals, and mental well-being. I encourage it, I embrace it and I am a champion of collaboration of different aspects of practices to achieve a physical and mental balance! I believe in maintaining a good and happy spirit and mind as much as you can because whether you believe it or not, it impacts your physical health. A happy place I find is dancing. I am a certified Zumba instructor. We offer dance classes at GlamCare, a treat my clients utilize and enjoy very much
I am a very avid women empowerment advocate, I love to teach and mentor, especially toward financial security goals, this is a passion of mine. That’s why I teach all of the services I offer and also offer ongoing education and business mentorship to help my students achieve a semblance of financial security
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As in any new business, and even with older businesses; no matter how great you are and how well-meaning you are, and how great the services and products you offer are if you don’t have visibility, nobody will see you or know about you.
My biggest challenge is marketing and getting my services to the right clientele. Creating awareness and passing information to people. I find that a lot of people, especially women, do not have the right information to make the right choices for themselves in regard to their bodies, feminine-type issues, anti-aging, and even balanced mental well-being. It is ok to take a little time to concentrate on yourself. Selfcare is good for both men and women.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking is very important and it is important that you widen your circle or sphere of influence. Word of mouth is very important.
One of the ways I started my med spa journey was by actually talking to people who had offered me services. I asked questions and sought out training from some of them. It is very important that if you do so, ask about mentorship. It helps to have a road map. GlamCare trains in all of our services and we offer ongoing mentorship to our students
You also have to actively seek out networking groups and socialize constantly with these groups. Visibility is important in business.
Seek out collaborations, many people are scared of collaborations because, in my opinion, they are short-sighted. The bigger the sphere of influence the better and bigger the business opportunities
I am actively seeking to collaborate and team up with like-minded and business-savvy trustworthy professionals and businesses.
