Meet Amy McMillin of Custom Care Rehab

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy McMillin. 

Amy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
A little about me, the founder of Custom Care Rehab. My name is Amy McMillin, and I have nearly two decades of experience successfully treating patients with complex vertigo conditions, headaches, and concussions in the state of Ohio as a Physical Therapist. Throughout my career, I have treated people debilitated by dizziness, migraines, concussions, anxiety, and more. I love what I do and believe in treating every patient like a member of my family. The problem I saw when treating patients in the clinic setting was the stress of coming to therapy; the time, the crowded gyms, the travel. Ultimately, the inconveniences can lead to non-compliance and non-recovery of patients. This led to the conception of Custom Care Rehab. 

Custom Care Rehab is a concierge Physical Therapy and Wellness company servicing North East Ohio. The current medical system is costly, confusing, timely, and burdensome. Having a person take the time out of their busy lives to spend 1 to 2 hours in a therapy appointment, finding a sitter, leaving school early, or taking time off work is not ideal in the recovery process. As a busy mom and business owner, I know the most precious commodity a person has is- time. We value your time and want to make your healthcare convenient, so we bring the therapy to you! 

Initially, I started the company with a focus on patients who need vestibular therapy or are experiencing dizziness, but over the past two years have expanded to provide orthopedic, neurologic, and athletic injury prevention as well. We currently have 3 physical therapists and one massage therapist available for patient care. I plan to continue growing Custom Care Rehab as long as the community demonstrates their wish for accessible quality healthcare. 

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I would not say my journey was not a smooth road, but one of many twist and turns. Around every corner was a new challenge and growth opportunity. Initially, the journey was just to believe that I could be a business owner after working 15 years in a corporate medical system. I worked my corporate job and built my business in tandem until I met consistent financial goals that proved I could sustain an income. Then came the challenge of getting consistent referrals. Wondering, ” how will I do this on my own?” Every blog, Facebook group, and business book all share numerous ideas including google ads, Facebook marketing, SEO, social media videos, business coaches, shock and awe, and the list goes on! It was overwhelming and confusing. By reflecting on my skills, I realized I am a people person and should use my networking skills to grow my reputation in the community. That tactic worked and within 2 months I was working 7 days a week for months until I decided it was time to find more Physical Therapists to join the Custom Care Rehab team. Now, the new twist in the road is becoming an administrator and manager to my new team members, which is a challenge I never knew I could tackle but I am enjoying the growth in my journey.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I found that to build my relationships in the community, a networking group was a great step. I personally joined the e-women’s network which was small and intimate which allowed for a lot of conversation among the members. However, I would not be opposed to joining larger local chapters of other networking groups. I find that networking allows you to connect with other like-minded individuals that may be a great referral sources. Networking groups allow you to build your reputation and roots within your community. 

I also found support from a like-minded concierge physician in the community, Melodie Phillips, MD. As a primary care physician who wants the best for her patients; she understood the mission of Custom Care Rehab. We shared a mutual vision for how healthcare could look in our community. In networking with a provider who values excellence in care, accessibility, and results; Custom Care Rehab was an appropriate option for some of her patients.
