Meet Aly Dies

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aly Dies.

Hi Aly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In September of 2022, I lost my grandfather, whom I was very close to. He was a mason, an artist, and he taught me how to create and love the little things in life. As a way to process my grief, I decided to press the flowers that was at his funeral. This sparked something in me. I fell in love with the process of pressing flowers. I started making wall hangings for my family members with the flowers from his funeral. After that, I decided to expand and create jewelry. I began going to different flower shops in Columbus, picking wildflowers, and growing my own flowers to press them and make earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and key chains. I named my business Westfair Design after my grandfather’s masonry business, westfair masonry.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has and hasn’t been. It has been a process learning the business side of art. I am a stay-at-home mom of a toddler, which also has its challenges- finding time to create can be tricky, but I try to make time for it every day.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create handmade goods made with pressed flowers. I am so proud of the work I make- it is so fun and beautiful to preserve little beautiful things. Not only can I help others cherish memories through floral art, but I can create beautiful pieces that can be worn for any occasion. It’s a constant learning process, but it is so rewarding to try new techniques.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe my willingness to try new things, even if they are hard, contributes to my success.
