Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Singleton.
Hi Alex, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Alex Singleton, I am a singer and have been most my life, but I really first started getting into music with some guitar lessons that my parents got me. Once those had ended after a few other teachers started using YouTube videos and chord sheets to learn new songs. I started playing music at the Farmers market in Hamilton, and from that, I started to get gigs for weddings, parties, and other local events. I had done that for a few years till I started writing my own songs which are now on Spotify.
Today I am attending College in Cincinnati for a Bachelor’s in Music, and I consistently put music on YouTube, where I play ’60s soul music, as wells as 60’s to present-day pop & rock.
I’m thankful for my parents and teachers who taught me so much, and most of all, God, who led me through it all.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Learning music hasn’t always been a smooth road. I never learned how to actually read music till I reached college, so up until somewhat recently, I relied heavily on hearing music and comparing them to chord sheets to see if I what I was playing was actually correct. This wasn’t so much of an issue at first, but as I communicated with other musicians and singers it became a bit of a struggle to work around. Sometimes I get disappointed too, but my family and friends were really encouraging to keep going, and I really appreciated that.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Well I write and record a lot of my own music. I do record covers of songs like most musicians, but that’s not my only focus. The artists I love are Sam Cook, Van Morison, CCR, and NEEDTOBREATHE. I mostly sing songs from these artists, and I take a lot of inspiration from them in making my own music. I then publish my music on Apple Music, Spotify, etc.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to love God and serve him always. When I first started out, this was the lesson I learned the importance of the most, and I hope it’s evident in the music I write
