Meet Aaron Day

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Day.

Hi Aaron, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I initially started “DJing” in college (I use air quotes because I didn’t really know what I was doing lol). I was always involved with music, I made beats in high school and had a massive music collection thanks to my dad, so people would pay me to upload their iPods with all the new songs. I decided one day that I had better music than what the frat boys were playing at parties, so I downloaded DJ software, showed up to a party with just my laptop, and became the unofficial campus DJ lol. After graduation I let it fall by the wayside but when my former teammate (DJ Prymtime) moved up to Cincinnati around 2016 and told me he was getting into DJing, I decided to pick it up again and truly take it seriously this time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve certainly had my share of ups and downs. Early on I lost 2 separate residencies due to the establishments closing, all while dealing with caring for my terminally ill mother. But through it all, I persevered and became a better person and DJ because of it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an open format DJ. I’m known for a variety of things, from playing at bars and clubs to playing on the radio. I’d say I’m most proud of making it to the finals of my first DJ battle and placing (3rd place). I was relatively inexperienced at the time, only playing on turntables for about 6 months beforehand, so that achievement really let me know that I was doing something right lol. What sets me apart is my versatility and ability to think outside the box. My past as a producer helps me to think about music from a different perspective. I’ll listen to a song and one of the first things I’ll try to pick out is if it samples anything, or if its drum pattern was ripped from an old 80’s song or not lol. That helps me to connect songs in my sets that blow the minds of people hearing me play.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I’ve learned that creating your own brand is key if you’re a creative in today’s society. You have to be able to stand out and make your own gigs, if need be because you never know when “fit is gonna hit the shan”.
