Life & Work with Tytiuanna Henderson of Cleveland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tytiuanna Henderson

Tytiuanna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Proudly I am a Detroit native, I believe hair is imbedded in us. I began braiding hair back when I was younger, you know just the front top of my hair. Had to spice up those hard press with a pressing comb, that my mom and granny would give me lol. However, didn’t know my skills and/or gift would be how it is today. In 2019, I would do sew ins here and there, being that was the first thing I mastered. 2020, I decided to take hair serious and even starting braiding more than doing other hairstyles. Of course, I would start and stop repeatedly because I had no faith in myself even when others told me to take it serious. Over a short period of time, I in fact tried several salons and/or suites but kept stopping. 2023, I moved into a home on Detroit’s east side, I had a basement that me and a very good friend of mine would work out of because we both did hair. I redid the whole little room by painting it, getting an actual salon chair, hair supplies and everything. I knew I was ready to take it serious, but again had no idea it was my gift. I decided to move to Cleveland, a little over a year ago with every intention of showing my talent. Instead, I got here and worked in Cleveland Clinic for a while first. That was totally was not in the plans lol. Getting back into my spiritual journey I prayed, asked God for this transition. I stopped officially working October 2024, so I started yet again. This time felt different when people were coming slowly but surely, recognizing my talent. It was one encounter I had after doing someone’s mother hair, who’s hair had not been done in a while. Her reveal was so wholesome she cried, which I didn’t expect but it clicked I have Gifted Hands. Ever since business has picked up, people tell me how much they love my work, how people recommended them to me, and my bookings are starting to accumulate over the past couple months. I never used to love what I do, honestly I am in love with it and I thank God for this gift.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When you’re in a journey, you’ll never be able to ease on down the road. I remember the movie The Oz, it was similar to The Wizard of Oz, but 10 times better. Only because Micheal Jackson was in it lol. It was so many stops, but every stop was a learning experience even though the kept ease on down the road. I kept losing faith as if I kept trying to figure out if I’ll make it in the hair industry, how will I stand out, or let alone become famous over night. Thinking the wrong things lead me to be in over my head, spending money on unnecessary unplanned moves, I would quit with no intent of starting over. The main struggle was having the mentality of this is a hustle not my passion.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in hair braiding. In knotless braids to be exact, but I do however do other braided styles. My parting is what I’m know for, I feel as if they are unmatched. Also, I am a perfectionist so I tend to get every little hair. I am most proud for not giving up this time around, and again I give thanks to God for giving me the strength, courage and joy to carry on. What sets me aside is my spirit, my personality and my work speaks for itself.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I have a saying, “you have to get uncomfortable, to get comfortable”. Meaning yes, in the beginning it will be things or experiences that makes it uncomfortable, but the destination is comfortability in your journey. You’ll know!
