Life & Work with Tyler Fisher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Fisher.

Hi Tyler, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My interest in photography/videography started in 2017 while attending the Ohio Media School – Columbus Campus. After getting my first camera, I just went out to the downtown area and started taking pictures. Practice and honing my skills got me involved with Ohio Dominican University and being the social media manager for the Men’s Soccer program. Even with Ohio Dominican, I still go out to sporting events and, in the city, to grab images and videos that just speak to me, to enhance my portfolio. I recently got more into the videography aspect, going out to local high school football games and making highlight tapes. I’m also indulging into vlogging and product unboxings and reviews. After five years in the photography area of the media industry, I’m still learning and growing. And I encourage readers who read my story, to not give up on your dreams and follow your heart. It can take you to big things.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. I think I contemplated the fact of giving up multiple times because I see how other photos and videos look, and I sat there and told myself “I’ll never get to that level.” I doubted myself. However, after talking with fellow creatives both here in Ohio and a friend of mine who lives in Utah, just picking their brain on their process and asking for tips and tricks, I decided to try new techniques, and have seen an improvement in my work. The biggest struggle along the way was the brainstorming. I often think of “How can I expand?” I don’t wanna do landscape or sports all my life. I want to be diverse. After watching a YouTube video — Pierre T. Lambert is the user’s name– and the one thing that stuck with me was what he said at the end, and that was “Those shoots [street photography], they’re for the soul. They’re for having fun. Don’t overthink it. Just go out there and go shoot. Try something different, try something new.” And I did and have loved everything about it so far.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a freelance photographer/videographer. I specialize in sports and portraits. I’m known for being the soccer nerd because not only do I play, I am also the social media manager for the Ohio Dominican Men’s Soccer team. I think I’m most proud of choosing my own lane and sticking with it. And I think the thing that sets me apart from others is the freedom. When I do shoots with people, I let them pick what pose they want to do, because it’s all for them. Memories they want to be captured.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is never sell yourself short. I had a terrible experience where a client booked me, had the photoshoot and they said they loved the photos. Then backtracked and said they weren’t really happy and never paid me. Thus, in turn, forced me to enforce deposits. Though it was a tough cookie to swallow, it’s been rewarding because now I know my worth and I know what my skillset is, so I charge accordingly.
