Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Carter Kizzie.
Hi Teresa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello, my name is Teresa Carter Kizzie, and I am an ordinary person with extraordinary dreams. Not the dreams you are thinking about. I did not care about being famous, a hoop star, a singer, or an actor. I dreamed of moving out of the projects, living healthy, and being wealthy. It may sound silly to most to consider that a dream because it is accessible and attainable. However, when you come from generations of poverty, domestic violence, and massive trauma. That dream is seemingly impossible. But I believe with a village, a passion, a drive, and trusting God and the process along the way. You can achieve almost anything. I did just that! I am originally from Columbus; oh. Grew up in and around the Franklin County area. I moved to Spring Hill, Tennessee, at the age of 11. I consider country Spring Hill a blessing to my life. It was much slower than Columbus was, and the energy was different. This was when I realized that I could dream bigger. And I did just that; I dreamed of getting out of poverty and becoming so educated that I would know how we got there and how never to get back there. And I knew college was what I needed. Therefore, I went to college! And I learned… A LOT! I first went to Columbia State Community College, where I played basketball and received my associate’s degree. Next, I went to Middle Tennessee State University, where I received a bachelor’s degree in communications and my master’s in education. I started my professional career in 2008; I was so happy that my dream had come true.
However, my dream did not stop there… I still crave to learn more. I became passionate about behavior and how our environment impedes our behavior. I went back to school to learn more; I went to Lipscomb University, received my Applied Behavior Analysis degree, and became a board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA). In May of this year, I will have my doctorate. Amid all of school, I was learning and transitioning. I also had a personal dream: to meet someone who was for me and loved me unconditionally and become a mother. And… I met an extraordinary person named William Kizzie, who I am happy to call “Bae,” as known as my husband. We have two beautiful children, Layla “9” and William “5.” Who keeps us super busy and grounded? I appreciate my family for always encouraging me to pursue my dreams. My latest goal was writing, completing, and sharing my story. I hope that you enjoy it and you are blessed along the way!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been smooth, bumping, and full of ups and downs. But there is no story without struggle.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Teresa attended Columbia State Community College, playing basketball and receiving an associate degree in communications. She earned a BA in Communications, and a master’s in education from Middle Tennessee State University. Teresa also received her Education Specialist Degree (Ed.S) in Applied Behavior Analysis from Lipscomb University, becoming a Board-Certified Behavior Analysis (BCBA). This May 2023, Teresa will earn her doctorate in Educational Leadership.
