Life & Work with Sonja Thams of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonja Thams.

Hi sonja, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It all stated for me when I took a surface design class in college and fell in love with the magic of natural dye pigments. All designs I create are hand-dyed with natural dyes in my studio located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Some designs are made with ancient techniques and dyes as well as new. Dyes are combined and tested to create new variations of colors. All fabrics are ethically sourced as well as hand cut and washed. I love to create new color and work with people of projects as much as I can.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I started my business part time while also running a retail store I owned at the time. When working to grow a business with limited time to work on it this can feel like a slow process to get where you want to be but over the years I worked really hard to continue to persevere and do what I was passionate about. Now about 3 years ago I completely switch to doing eco raw studio full time and I love it so much.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work exclusively with only plant dye pigments in all dye projects that I do. I also create all my designs and do all the screen printing in house. I am a one women show and do all this on my own. I find inspiration from nature and creating things with my hands.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I would define success as a state a happiness. the happiest you are in your daily the most successful I feel.
