Today we’d like to introduce you to Sindur McRedmond. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Sindur was founded by Sindur Shah McRedmond, G.G. We offer services in appraisal and independent jewelry design for individuals and wholesale traders and continues to provide consulting services for many Cincinnati-area jewelers. We specialize in custom engagement rings and one of a kind pieces. From the traditional to the one-of-a-kind, Sindur is excited to bring customers the best selection of unique jewelry items, hand-selected and personally curated as always by Sindur herself.
As a first generation immigrant from India who moved to the US at the age of 14. By the age of 18, Sindur attended the prestigious Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Carlsbad, CA where she studied both the art and science of diamonds, gemstones, and jewelry. After graduating from GIA with degrees in Gemology and Jewelry Design, Sindur went on to hold positions with 4C’s Gem Imports, an independently-owned and operated diamond department within parent company, Quality Gold, and also with landmark Cincinnati jeweler, William Effler Jewelers.
During this time, Sindur developed her own external consulting business working with many renowned regional jewelers, including Paolo A Modern Jeweler, Heileman Jewelers, Boris Litwin Jewelers, and Smith Jewelers. In 2006, after more than a decade as a practicing gemologist, consultant, and jewelry designer, Sindur formally established her own company — Sindur, LLC doing business as Sindur Fine & Antique Jewelry.
In addition to her successful and ever-growing business as an independent jeweler, Sindur took on a new challenge in 2013, signing on as a private contractor for Everything But The House. The amount of jewelry traded on the EBTH platform multiplied exponentially as Sindur quickly optimized the digital market space. In July of 2016, Sindur accepted the Director of Gemology position at EBTH’s central processing center. During her time there, Sindur worked to transform a $6 million dollar a year department into $30 million in sales processed in 2017. She parted with EBTH in 2018 and focused her energy back to her own business.
Today, she is primarily focused on her own company Sindur Fine & Antique located in Cincinnati, OH ( Blue Ash) and is proud to say her company has been voted “Best Independent Jeweler” in Cincinnati for 2021 and 2022. Her love for her son, her work and clients is her daily driving force.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. Our industry like most other industries is forever changing. Working as a female in an industry that is dominantly male driven also brings its own sets of challenges. I have heard everything from “Can I talk to your manager” to “Can I talk to that man instead” assuming he was in charge. I have worked hard to look past the bias, be kind and passionate in the face of sexual bias. Being innovative and offering the best customer service and value pertaining to anything jewelry for my clients has been paramount. Covid certainly also came with its own struggles. From team members being out to gold prices being at an all time high to keeping up with the demand for a small business certainly was very challenging but I’m proud to say we were nominated at the BEST Independent Jeweler two years in a row during the most tying times for us. That has meant so much and helped me keep striving for the best and looking forward.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My passion is antique and vintage jewelry as each piece is dripping in history and workmanship like no other. Antique and vintage pieces each were often made by hand and they didn’t mass produce anything in those eras. I love educating clients on the various eras and what metals, stones and styles represent that specific time frame. I love to share the history based on hallmarks or the construction of those pieces. Explain how each piece was often commissioned and made for the recipient. I love antique cut stones as their beauty is unparalleled.
We take pride in offering an extensive selection of Antique and vintage items that are not readily available in most jewelry stores in Cincinnati. We offer custom designs on all other categories such as bridal and engagement ring. We stock various other ready-to-wear items that are either designed by us or are sourced by us at prices that can’t be beat.
We have an extensive collection of diamonds and loose stones to help you create the piece of your dreams. We apply our industry knowledge and education in helping clients pick the perfect stone for their engagement rings or design the most simple to elaborate pieces for special occasions.
We also offer appraisals for insurance or estate evaluations. We often meet clients that are downsizing or helping an elderly relative with their estate. We take pride in offering the best buy-out prices or education on their pieces so they know what they have and what they should accept when parting with those pieces.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Knowledge and transparency.
I have worked in every facet of the jewelry industry thus I bring unparalleled knowledge to the table start to finish. I take deep pride in hearing the client. Understanding their vision and making it come to life. It is also my job to educate them the pro’s and con’s of each piece or design. There are always a few on each side of the column.
A salesperson is good at selling. A gemologist can test and prove a stone or diamond is what it is. A CAD designer can create a design. But they each often can’t speak each other’s languages. I can take all those and many other facets and translate it to the client with applied and accumulated experience to help them understand what they are choosing and “why” behind it. It takes years to implement the knowledge that is acquired while attending GIA but then translating it to functional practices in the jewelry business is a whole different story. That just takes time and is only possible with continued education and application in our forever changing jewelry industry landscape.
