Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Parton
Hi Shelby, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from Walsh University, located in North Canton, OH with my bachelors in Early Childhood Education specializing in Intervention Specialist. When I met my husband, Alex at my University, it was love at first sight and there for I moved to Toledo for him. I always knew I loved educating, but didn’t think I would leave the education world so soon. I left teaching after almost 2 years and went to be an Administrative assistant and soon realized I truly missed teaching. After two years of being and administrative assistant, I went to my husbands uncle to ask if he was building his team with HealthMarkets. After almost 6 years, I haven’t looked back. I truly have a passion for helping others understand what their benefits really cover and what gaps there are. I opened my storefront office now located in Sylvania almost 2 years this June.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth Road? What’s a smooth road? HAHA- it was NOT easy, especially at the very beginning. It is much easier now, but still not perfect. But that is life. I had to manage a new born my first year being in the 1099 (self-employed) world, a husband who is in the military, balancing the marriage life, etc. BUT I wouldn’t trade it for anything. All the bumps in the road make it worth it. I am not saying I am perfect even now, as we have to adapt to change and we all know the insurance world in general changes. I feel as if I am always in school to making sure I have my clients up to speed with those changes. This is where my teaching degree comes into play along with having a supportive husband and daughter with how crazy my schedule can be.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Health Insurance Broker. Being a Broker, I can provide a wide variety of carriers, not just being tide to one. Having multiple carriers and products HELP me be able to guide my clients to the best plan that fits their needs. I specialize in: Individual/Families, Medicare, Short Term, Supplemental, Dental/Vision, Life and Small Group. I am known for Educating NOT selling a product. I never want my clients to think I am simply here to sell, I am here go guide and protect for the unknowns in life. I am proud of how far I have come with how many clients trust me to help them and their friends/family. I think what sets me apart is truly the education portion along with NEVER charging a consultation fee.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I have read motivational books and love to read in general with books that are great at grabbing my attention. I wouldn’t say I have my ONE favorite book, as they all have a little piece of something that I can take away from.
