Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane Grove.
Hi Shane, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been a songwriter for almost 13 years and a podcaster for almost 3. I have always been interested in writing and for a long time focused on writing screenplays. Around 2009 a friend and I decided to try and write a country song. How hard could it possibly be! Songwriting turned out to be one of the most difficult yet rewarding things I ever decided to do. Not being in or even close to Nashville made it an even bigger challenge. It is a craft that takes lots of hard work to be decent but an immeasurable about of work to be great. There is no such thing as an overnight sensation. However, the biggest piece of the puzzle is making relationships. Treat everyone with kindness and respect and say “yes” as much as you can. Something good can always happen when you say “Yes”. Becoming a podcaster was not something I had ever considered until a friend of mine went on a podcast to tell his own paranormal experience. Once I started listening to other similar shows, I knew that was something I would love to do. Who doesn’t want to talk to people about Bigfoot, Ghosts, and UFOs! When we started the From The Shadows Podcast, we had no idea what we were doing but over 250 shows later we have listeners all over the world and it allows me another avenue to be creative. I host, write and help produce the show. All things I never thought I would be able to put on my resume!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As far as songwriting struggles go, the biggest obstacle is making connections and assuring others that you are capable and serious about the craft despite not living in Nashville. The world of entertainment is always a rough road. For every “yes” you hear you are going to hear 10 “nos”. You have to have thick skin and believe in yourself! The podcasting road is similar. You have to work hard, be consistent, and have a little luck to be noticed amongst the 100’s of thousands of other shows that are out there!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am primarily a country music songwriter. I am most known as someone who writes in and “old school” style, I guess. I always try to be the one who comes to the co-write with the best hook and idea for the song we are going to write. I am most proud of just getting to a point where I am respected by my fellow songwriters and artists for being a good person and decent writer. It has been an honor to have songs recorded by Tanya Tucker, Eddie Montgomery, and David Allan Coe to name a few. As a podcaster, the From The Shadows Podcast specializes in the paranormal. We provide a safe place for people to share stories that they may have kept a secret for 40 to 50 years in some cases! Our show is set apart from other by our laid-back and fun-loving approach to the subject matter. We have fun but we never make fun of the subject or person telling their story.
The most rewarding aspect of my creative experiences are the friends and new connections I have made. Through my songwriting, I was able to branch out into doing some acting as well as some producing work with the release of the movie “Escape From DeathBlock 13” that was filmed in Ohio.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Be kind and be honest. Those are the two best ways to build your network. You are only as good as the people you know. Work hard and set your expectations to being fulfilled by the creative process. Success will come in different forms and when you least expect it!
