Life & Work with Samantha Ludwig of Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Ludwig

Samantha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It’s a cliche, but I’ve loved art for as long as I can remember. I recently came across a kindergarten project in which I expressed my goal to be an artist. I designed my education around art since I was eleven and some of my happiest memories were exploring creativity in undergrad at the Kansas City Art Institute. I hope to maintain my relationship with creativity always. It is at the core of who I am and it keeps life interesting, even exhilarating.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Pursuing a creative life comes with enormous rewards and challenges. In a technologically driven world, it’s easy to put pressure on the creative process to speed up and meet demands, but drawing and painting are analogue traditions deserving of the time to explore. When that extra space is given, it’s incredible how the artwork can unfurl and create the most beautiful and rewarding results. Though these storied practices can sometimes be tedious, they are a touchstone of the human experience that date back to the beginning of man. It gives me great pleasure to carry on this essential human tradition.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m most well known for petite architectural portraits. I began drawing homes over 10 years ago to fashion an archive. Similar to the homes I draw, these small portraits are personal and can be cherished by an individual, or, when grouped together, they can represent a community and the individual’s place as part of a whole. Each location exists simultaneously as an intimate space as well as a shared memory and experience for those who inhabit the space throughout decades. Though this is my longest running project, I also have been painting, weaving and print making other series alongside it.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I’m blessed to say it’s impossible to pick one moment, but some of my favorite times were spent at my grandparent’s home in Cleveland. We’d hike, garden, care for animals, and play canasta or dominos late into the night with family. Those are memories I cherish greatly.
