Life & Work with Roseann Willson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roseann Willson.

Hi Roseann, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a camera in my hands. When the pandemic hit, I got furloughed from both my jobs in within two weeks. So, I dived into the world of photography head-on. In these past couple years, I’ve learned so much and continue to learn every time I shoot. I absolutely love it! I am now a full-time wedding photographer, shooting 46 weddings in two years. On the side, I like to dabble in all sorts of photography, whether it’s shooting our kiddos and playing outside or working on a more artistic projects. Right now, I’m really loving all things floral and floral art!

One of the coolest parts about my job is the people. My brides and grooms usually become good friends. We get to know each other in the months leading up to their wedding day, and it makes capturing their wedding that much more special. Also, all the families I’ve got to photograph along the way have been so heartfelt. My heartstrings are definitely pulled when I see how much kiddos grown in between sessions. I also have to recognize all the extremely talent and inspiring photographers and videographers I’ve met! The people are what makes this job a passion!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I went to the school of YouTube and google to learn the basics about photography. Then I went out and shot as much as possible and really tried to think about what I was doing and how to do it better. Just take a second, pause and think about the basics: your camera setting, your subject and composition, and what story you are trying to tell. I learn something every time I shoot. I think if you stop learning, then you either have lost interest or you’re not trying to grow.

Thanks to the support of my husband, this has been a relatively smooth journey. He has really encouraged me to take photography on as a career.

One challenge was in the middle of stating my business; we moved from South Georgia to the Cincinnati area. My husband just retired from the US Navy Submarine force. We moved here to plant roots, and we are not moving again! But starting over again in a new area, it took a lot to get my name out there.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a full-time wedding photographer who loves to travel. I went to school for Political Science International Relations with ambitions of world travel and living abroad. When I married the love of my life, I also was very aware that I might not pursue the same career I had hoped. We would live wherever he would get stationed. At times, that was a hard thing to accept. But that said, I couldn’t be happier with my life, my love, and our story together. I feel very lucky to have found and to have married the love of my life!

Now, I am a photographer who gets to travel, in other ways, to capture people’s most special days and tell their story and those relations. I get to meet people from all over. I get to see different ways of celebrating love and experience different cultures through the traditions of marriage.

I think there are so many wonderful and talented photographers out there. But I am proud of my work ethic and my unwavering commitment to doing the best I can all the time. I don’t get tired on long wedding days. I am fully immersed in the moment and living vicariously through each and every one of my brides and grooms. I try the best I can to capture their full story on their wedding day, including all the little moments they may miss, such as grandpa dancing with that sweet baby girl while bride and groom are mingling with other guests.

What makes you happy?
I am happy when other people are happy. I think smiles and laughter is truly infectious. I always joke about my nose at the end of a wedding day. It usually a different color that my face because I spent the whole day smiling with the camera on my face. I smile because I love my job and because I’m around people smiling on their happiest of days.
