Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Hause.
Hi Nick , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Born and raised in Akron, Ohio, I have lived here for 32 years now. Robotics and remote control toys have always been apart of my life. Whether it be tearing down my broken Air Hogs airplane to make into a bigger one, taking apart my Evel Knievel stunt bike to see how it worked, or building anything I could think of with Legos, I have always designed and figured my own way to make it work.
Amateur motocross is a big part of my life, especially when I lost my mother when I was 20. I credit the sport to giving me an outlet for my emotions and direction for myself. With the sport, comes injuries, which I have had a few. Two back surgeries, including a fusion at 27, and multiple broken bones.
During the spring of 2022, I had one of the worst accidents I have had on a bike and ended up breaking my left fibula and hyper extended my knee. During the time off, I started thinking it would be the end of my riding, and could not stand the feeling of not doing what I loved, next to the people I loved.
At that point, I realized I could do the same thing the guys on TV are doing, and still be involved in the sport I love.
Flying drones, working on electronics, 3d printing, and manufacturing parts are all skillsets I already possessed. Soon I had my first FPV drone, and spent the next months practicing how to fly precisely and with a cinematic mindset.
Almost immediately I had a resounding positive feedback from every track owner and rider I was filming. Coming up on three years now, I am still getting invited back and to new facilities.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Learning the regulations on drone flights in USA was something I didnt realize at first was going to be needed. The Federal Aviation Administration is who regulates the entire airspace over our heads, and there are a lot of rules for good reasons.
Studying for a prep course brought me back to my schooling days. Over one month and I felt confident in my abilities to pass the Part 107 Certification test to be legally allowed to fly commercially.
When I was studying for the test, I came across all sorts of avenues for commercial use of drones.
Roof inspections/ home inspections were one of the first jobs I picked up, but that quickly turned into a bad relationship with one company.
Cash flow is also a big issue with Media work I have found out. Being that I currently work full time as a CNC machinist, my time is limited to when I can do jobs. Drones are only one tool in a media teams toolbox.
Once I stopped accepting any work outside of extreme sports coverage, manufacturing my own drone frames became my priority.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
FPV drone coverage of extreme sporting events is my specialty for media coverage.
From covering a local group of BMX riders to filming the ATV National race with 40000 people attending.
I am most proud of the fact that previous customers keep asking me to come back.
Following regulations, and making sure all my bases are covered.
During my time flying drones, I have come across quite a few pilots that do not care about rules or regulations.
I have never injured or had to use my liability insurance for any event, nor do I plan on it. But I do have it if the situation does arise.
