Life & Work with Laura Klaserner of Westside of Cincinnati

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Klaserner

Hi Laura, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The Journey of a Passionate Photographer

My photography journey began unexpectedly at Sears Portrait Studio. It was my senior year, and I had gone in for my portraits. Shortly after, I received a call asking if they could use my photos for advertising. When I visited to sign the release, I struck up a conversation with the manager, who surprised me with an unexpected question: “Would you like a job here?”

That opportunity became the foundation of my photography career, teaching me the basics of posing and lighting. While pursuing Marketing at Cincinnati State, I managed coffee shops to support myself. Pictures were always my first love—coffee was a close second!

After college, I became a nanny for a family with two children, including a son with Cystic Fibrosis. During my six years with them, they became more than just an employer—they were family. Caring for their children inspired me to dream of becoming a mother. Eventually, I had two beautiful children of my own, and divine timing led me to take the leap into my next adventure.

During my final week with the family, they wrote me heartfelt letters about how I had completed their “family circle.” They encouraged me to follow my heart and start my own photography business. Their words sparked the creation of My Inner Circle Photography. My business name reflects my mission: when I work with clients, they quickly become part of my inner circle.

Ten Years of Growth and Gratitude

Looking back, I realize photography was always my calling. Growing up, my parents were avid photo-takers, and I spent hours at Walgreens editing pictures on their little computers. In high school, photography was my favorite class, and I carried both film and digital cameras everywhere. Back then, I didn’t know I could turn my passion into a career.

Now, ten years later, I focus on full-service photography. My clients enjoy a seamless experience, from selecting the perfect location and outfits to optional hair and makeup services. I ensure every session is stress-free and memorable. I also assist with printing, wall art, and even installation—turning cherished moments into tangible keepsakes.

My Senior Team and senior photography remain the heart of my business, alongside family portraits and professional headshots. Photography is more than a job; it’s a way to connect with people and show them the beauty in themselves and the world around them.

God didn’t make me the best at everything, but He gave me a big heart and the ability to uplift others through my art. I now see that as a gift, one I’m committed to sharing as I continue my photography journey.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overcoming Challenges: Finding Strength Through Loss and Hope

Starting my photography business ten years ago was no small feat. At the time, I had a two-year-old and a one-year-old at home. I wanted to show my children that moms can work hard, pursue their passions, and build something meaningful. Over the years, I’ve been blessed to create countless memories with my beautiful clients, capturing moments that truly matter.

But life has a way of testing us. My journey has been marked by unimaginable heartbreak and challenges that reshaped my world. My third child was diagnosed with Triploidy, and after many terrifying weeks, she was stillborn. That loss changed me forever. I held onto hope for a while, yearning for the life I once knew, but that hope was further tested by a miscarriage and another late and traumatic loss. It was in those moments that I felt my dreams of a happy, perfect life slipping away.

Loss was not new to my family. My mother experienced the heartbreak of losing her twin boys shortly after their birth—boys who were born a year and a day before me. My sister also endured the loss of a stillborn child a year before my own losses. Each of these tragedies was caused by different circumstances, but they left an indelible mark on us all.

Looking back, I realize how much the strength of those around me helped me navigate my own grief. Family friends who had experienced child loss became a source of knowledge, perspective, and hope. They were my guiding light, even when I felt like giving up.

Amidst these challenges, my oldest daughter faced her own battle. She was diagnosed with Ataxia, a condition that brought us on a long and uncertain journey toward recovery. Her miraculous progress has been a blessing, though the road remains a challenging one.

In the midst of all this, my rainbow baby, Rowan, came into our lives. For the past five years, he has been a beacon of hope—a reminder that even after the darkest storms, light can break through.

These experiences taught me to prioritize my family’s physical and mental health. We’ve worked hard to heal and thrive, and today, we are stronger and closer than ever. The pain and loss have given me a deeper understanding of life’s fragility and the importance of cherishing every moment.

Through my photography, I strive to frame time and preserve the beauty of fleeting moments. Life’s challenges have made me more empathetic and passionate about my work. I know how precious every memory is, and I’m honored to capture them for others.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Bringing Full-Service Photography Back to Life

In an age where quick snapshots dominate, I’m on a mission to revive the lost art of full-service photography. Over the years, I’ve realized that not everyone knows how to choose clothing that photographs beautifully, style their hair and makeup for the camera, or design and install stunning gallery walls to showcase their memories. That’s where I step in.

From start to finish, my goal is to make clients feel fully cared for—like they’re truly part of My Inner Circle. I guide them through every step of the process, ensuring their photos and experiences are as stress-free and enjoyable as possible.

Specializing in Seniors: Capturing a Defining Year

My heart and focus now lie in senior photography, particularly with my Senior Team. It’s a full-circle moment for me, as my journey into photography began with my own senior portraits. I take immense pride in creating a positive impact on seniors during this pivotal year of their lives.

For my Senior Team, the experience is much more than just a photo session. We include hair and makeup sessions, natural beauty shoots, a personalized session designed just for them, and a cap-and-gown session to celebrate their graduation. Throughout the year, they also have opportunities to participate in additional shoots, especially when I’m experimenting with fresh ideas.

The team itself is a community. Each senior is interviewed and must meet a few key requirements: be positive, kind, and open to building friendships with girls from other schools. Watching them grow, forge new connections, and form lasting friendships is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.

Balancing Life and Legacy

What sets me apart is the balance I’ve found between pursuing my career and prioritizing my family. I’ve learned that I might not be as far along in my career as I once imagined, but I’ve never given up—and that perseverance is something I’m deeply proud of.

For me, family comes first, health comes second, and my career comes third. I’ve built my photography business around that philosophy, knowing that the legacy I’m leaving for my children is just as important as the memories I create for my clients. My children—now 12, 10, and 5 years old—are thriving and growing into amazing individuals.

As a mom to three busy kids and the wife of a hardworking husband with an incredible career, finding balance hasn’t always been easy. But I’ve learned that pouring energy into myself allows me to show up fully for my family and my clients. Today, we’ve found a beautiful rhythm that works for us, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Here’s a polished version of your response, tailored for an engaging and inspiring magazine feature:

Looking Ahead

Next year marks a new chapter. With all three of my children in school full-time, I’ll have more hours to dedicate to my work—and I’m ready to embrace it. My health, which was a struggle after my pregnancies, is finally back on track, and I’m excited about what the future holds.

This journey has been about more than just photography—it’s about building connections, celebrating life’s precious moments, and showing others that no matter the challenges, perseverance and love can create something truly beautiful. Watch out, world—I’m just getting started!

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The Future of Photography: Embracing Change and Staying Human

As I look ahead to the next 5–10 years, I know there’s a lot of speculation and even fear about where art and photography are headed—especially with the rise of AI. While I understand the concerns, I’m not worried. AI might offer incredible tools, but it can never replicate the human connection, attention to detail, and genuine care that photographers bring to their clients.

What sets photography apart is the relationship between the photographer and their subject. A computer can generate an image, but it can’t create trust, make someone feel comfortable, or capture the true essence of a moment. Those are deeply human elements, and I believe they will always be at the heart of what we do.

I also hope to see a shift in the industry toward full-service photography. Too often, the focus is on quick digital downloads and fast turnover. While convenience is important, I believe people are yearning for something more personal and meaningful. Helping clients choose the perfect outfits, coordinating hair and makeup, and designing custom wall art installations are elements that elevate the photography experience. It’s not just about taking pictures—it’s about creating a story, an experience, and a memory that clients will treasure for years to come.

Staying Optimistic

The photography industry has always been adaptable. Over the years, we’ve embraced changes in technology, trends, and techniques. I see AI as another tool in our toolbox—not a replacement for creativity, but a way to enhance what we already do. It might help with editing or efficiency, but the soul of photography will always lie in the human touch.

As we move forward, I’m optimistic. I believe photographers who focus on building relationships, providing exceptional service, and capturing authentic moments will thrive in this ever-changing industry. It’s an exciting time to be a part of this world, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
