Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry Fouché.
Hi Larry, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I’ve had a passion for music for as long as I can remember. As a child, my mother, Mia Fouché, would catch me trying to hit the high notes in songs and even banging on tables with pencils, trying to make beats. I was always intrigued by the different rhythms, melodies, and harmonies but had never thought of making my own for others to listen to. That was until my father, Larry Davis Jr., introduced me to a music software called Hammerhead Rhythm Station in 1999 and another called FL Studio 3 (which used to be named Fruity loops at the time) in 2001. I kept working on my craft for years and had only let my parents and close friends hear the music that I created. In 2014, I decided to upload my music to different websites and started to reach out to recording artists in my hometown such as Kalom Montgomery and Anthony Hendrix, who are still good friends of mine today. Fast forward to 2016, my hard drive containing all of the music and sounds that I created over the years had broken. I felt like giving up. Then, I happened to come across a social media post by Grammy Award-winning music producer !llmind, who was advertising a Sound pack for sale and a contest in which producers had to use the sounds included within the sound pack to make 1 beat for review. I purchased the sound pack, made a beat, and a few months later, I found out that I had won his contest! I had started to submit music through his record label Roseville Music Group, and in time, I had my first song placement with another Ohio-native and Recording artist, Tangina Stone. The song was called “Exposed” featuring Nelly Furtado. Since then, I’ve launched my own website “WhoIsFouche.com,” I’ve won a few other contests, and I have even acquired partnerships with well-known music/ sound design companies Sounds.com and Landr.com. It’s been a long journey, yet I’m still excited about what’s up ahead.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road and there were times that I felt like giving up. Being a music producer is essentially like owning your own business. There were a lot of things that I had to learn by myself through research or trial-and-error as other producers, at the time, weren’t just giving away information. I’ve had to stay up long nights working on music projects in hopes that someone would purchase what I had made. I didn’t like waiting for anyone, so I had to learn other parts of the music business such as Graphic Design, Marketing/ Promotion, Networking, Video Editing, etc. While I was learning these different things, I noticed that I was also sacrificing time with my family and sleep. The strain on different relationships, without anything to really show for it initially, caused me to put music on the backburner for a while. Over time, I’ve learned better time management skills, spent more time with family, I’m getting more sleep, and this is all while doing what I love. Creating.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Music Producer, Sound Designer, and Graphic Designer. I’m mostly known for my downloadable drumkits for other music producers to use in their beats called “Atomic Drums” drumkits. I’m also known for my hard-hitting Hip-hop and R&B instrumental beats. Everything that I’ve learned to do pertaining to creating music has been done without any further education, schooling, or music theory classes. I base all of the music I create on feeling and emotion.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For those just starting out in Music production or Sound design, I would say YouTube is your friend. I’ve learned so much being doing research on YouTube and I’m still learning today. Building your networking skills is always a plus as well. Manage your time wisely for you and those close to you.
