Life & Work with Kyla of Westerville, Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyla.

Hi Kyla, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I run two businesses and have three creative interests (podcasts and blogs). The story begins with law school and creating things that I wish existed!

The summer before law school, I learned to crochet. I only knew three patterns and was fascinated by watching a skein of yarn turn into a blanket or hat. To incorporate crocheting with studying, I would take notes in class, record myself reading them aloud, and listen to the recording while I crocheted.

As a 2L, we had a winter storm, and I started to sell scarves to classmates. Did I mention that I went to law school in Louisiana? The storm was one inch of snow and ice, but local stores weren’t prepared for the weather. There was a demand for warmer clothing and I had an inventory of products. This was a crash course in supply and demand, and the realization that I hadn’t included the cost of my labor in the price of the scarves. Oops.

Fast forward five years and I moved to Ohio. I had not passed the Louisiana bar exam or qualified to become an attorney. I worked in operations at Vorys, Sater, Seymour, and Pease, holding roles that included document specialist, practice group assistant, and enforcement coordinator. I started meeting a lot of interesting people, including accountants and data analysts, who had law degrees but chose not to practice law. Wait… Could I admit that I went to law school? Could I be proud of earning a law degree? YES!

I decided to share my experiences as a non-traditional lawyer and create the “You Are A Lawyer” podcast, where I interview lawyers and discuss their lives outside the courtroom. With more than 210 episodes, we discuss how a law degree serves each guest as a yoga instructor, beauty brand founder, international blogger, children’s book author, etc. You Are A Lawyer is my way of humanizing lawyers and celebrating the person under the title.

In 2023, I created KD Creative to help business owners gain more attention with podcasting. Whether you want to host a podcast, secure guest roles on other podcasts, or sell ads on podcasts, we will work together to expand your brand. I help business owners get into the ears of their dream customers.

In August 2025, I created a business mentorship program called Accomplished Creator. After working with business owners, I realized that there were significant knowledge gaps in technology. With Accomplished Creator, I mentor virtual consultants and coaches on automating repetitive tasks and creating operating procedures so that they can avoid burnout.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a business owner has not been a smooth road, as I had to give myself permission to be a creative person.

I didn’t know that I was allowed to create a podcast. Aren’t I supposed to be this formal, uppity lawyer type? I had to allow myself to be silly and enjoy expressing myself in new ways. I expected to become my favorite character from the Suits tv show and lead by instilling fear in my colleagues. I also want to mention that being a business owner is not a linear path. You don’t go from high-achieving law student, editor of the newspaper, to graphic designer overnight. I was embarrassed by not passing the bar exam. I was embarrassed by working around lawyers and not practicing. I was embarrassed by getting paid to speak all day and wanting traditional career success. The truth is, I. hadn’t seen it done because people weren’t discussing it, so I chose to discuss it.

I had a lot of unlearning about what was appropriate and acceptable as an adult, a lawyer, and a creative person. You take one step and make it as amazing as possible, and the other steps (and businesses) happen over time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a brand strategist and dream enabler! I ask every client to imagine themselves in three years and tell me what they want: Money? A client wait list? Confidence? Attention? We use podcasting to help you achieve your goals.

My business is KD Creative, and we expand brand visibility through podcasting. Brand visibility is attracting attention and customers to your brand. I specialize in mentorship and brand strategy at KD Creative.

Most business owners have a great product or service, but people cannot find their business. How do you cut through the noise and stand out? By getting into the ears of your dream customers. My clients can choose to host a podcast, be a guest on a podcast, or advertise through podcasts (selling ads or paid sponsorships).

I am known as a storyteller and megaphone. I will promote your brand to everyone and their friends, ensuring that you reach the ears of your dream customers.

I am most proud of allowing this business to evolve and grow. That sounds silly, but it’s true. Initially, I volunteered to help people start podcasts because I wanted their stories to be told. Then I undercharged clients. Finally, a client paid me and told me to keep the money because the tasks were too time-consuming. HA! I had to evolve until I found the perfect combination of offerings, pricing, and collaboration.

What sets me apart is that I offer done-for-you services. Business owners can expand their brands after a few meetings with me, and with no additional chaos to their calendars. I’ll let you know when to show up to record, that’s it. I’ll prepare the interview questions, find the guests, edit the content, create the cover art, social media posts, pitch you for paid speaking assignments, and handle everything.

The client skips the boring stuff. I handle the logistical stuff. I’m the luckiest person ever!

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson is not having any regrets. All of my formal education and training come with me to every creative project.

I enjoy strategizing, working urgently, and innovating old processes. I also enjoy editing audio for five hours, graphic design, and traveling with clients to networking events. I utilize my operations knowledge to plan out a podcast season and secure paid sponsorships. I use my legal training to comprehend a brand contract and write concise episode notes. This should be the oddest combination of skills, but it works for me, and I am having a lot of fun.
