Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Colon.
Hi Kayla, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been the ultimate girly girl. Growing up, I was drawn to all things beauty and fashion, and that love really shaped who I am today. I attended The Ohio State University, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Social Work and became a Licensed Social Worker. While I valued that experience, I knew deep down that my true passion lived in the beauty world. Right after graduating, I followed my instincts and enrolled in cosmetology school, where I earned my advanced cosmetology certification and became an advanced licensed cosmetologist.
While in school, I joined a bridal beauty team and quickly fell in love with styling hair and the energy of the wedding industry. That experience sparked something bigger, and in 2023 I launched my own bridal hair business. Today, I run it full time and have just completed my third wedding season — doing what I love and building a career that feels completely aligned with who I’ve always been.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of my biggest struggles was the pressure to follow a more traditional path. Having a degree, there was an expectation to use it, secure a stable 9–5, and choose a predictable income over risk. The pressure mainly coming from myself. Deciding to fully dive into my business meant trusting myself and choosing passion over certainty, which wasn’t always easy and still isn’t.
Another major struggle I have faced and still continue to face is imposter syndrome. Starting out in the industry so young and having to find my footing was definitely a challenge. Especially when the most asked question when I am styling someone’s hair is “So how long have you been doing this?” and the unimpressed/concerned look on their face that followed when I answered. The truth is, my lack of confidence pushed me to invest in myself and my skills that much more. I am always looking for ways to improve and provide a better experience for my brides and clientele and I believe that is what sets me apart from others.
Pushing through those roadblocks has been essential to my growth both personally and professionally and has helped shape the business and confidence I have today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a bridal hairstylist specializing in clean updos and glam waves. I’m especially known for my piled-high, twisted updos and styles that feel elevated, polished, and effortlessly elegant while still holding up through an entire wedding day. My focus is always on creating looks that enhance a bride’s natural beauty and make her feel confident, calm, and radiant in the moments that matter most.
What I’m most proud of is my ambition and determination to follow my dreams, even when there was a real possibility of failure. Choosing this path required a lot of faith in myself, and that belief was instilled in me early on by my parents, who raised me to believe I was always destined for greatness and capable of success. That foundation has allowed me to trust that I’m meant to do something impactful. For me, that impact comes from touching hundreds, and hopefully one day thousands, of brides and lives by playing a small but meaningful role in one of the biggest days of their lives.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories is simply growing up with my brothers. As the oldest, with a larger age gap between us, I cherished being able to live under the same roof and always have them just a few feet away. I loved letting them sleep in my bed when they were little, laughing together, and sharing those everyday moments that felt so simple at the time. Looking back, it’s those moments of playfulness and constant togetherness that I miss the most and hold closest to my heart.
