Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Zone
Hi Kara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I came into indie publishing through the back door. I started as a ghostwriter and through successes and failures, I learned how to develop a good indie campaign and saw so many people quit because they weren’t properly prepared or were given false expectations that were unrealistic, I decided that I wanted to become a consultant.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. It’s been a series of disappointments.
I watched each person who came from “publishing academies” drop out of the indie publishing world. Some of these were family issues and legitimate, others were just so beat down by the constant difficulties that indie publishing has to offer, they left even when they had full manuscripts written and ready for publication.
It’s not just the writing that’s difficult, I can explain to someone a hundred times how the process works, and there are still expectations that you’ll get a Stephen King level quality book with low pay and five weeks. The entire indie publishing industry changes frequently. There is research to do with data, cover designs, etc. Algorithms to track, and even more items that need to be constantly looked after.
However, there is a method to the madness and while there are things that continually change, learning to bend with the movement is the difference between successful authors and those who give up.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I started writing fifteen years ago.
I didn’t stop writing, but I did take a much-needed journey to learn how to like myself, I went to college, therapy, and learned how to be a better person for myself and for my kids.
Throughout that time, I built up confidence and knew one day I’d start on my publishing path.
I’m here now.
I’ll be indie (aka self-) publishing my first novel from everything I’ve learned over the last five-and-a-half years.
I specialize in indie publishing, my debut novel is coming out in January, 2025.
What matters most to you? Why?
Helping people achieve their goals and dreams.
Getting them to understand that they can get there even if the journey is different and may be difficult.
