Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Ashley.
Hi Jordan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Whelp, believe it or not, Little Black Logo started as an OOPS! I had downloaded Adobe as a FREE two-week trial and just wanted to create some fun content to post on social media.
As people began to see my posts, and the engagement I was getting, the questions of “where did you get those graphics.” and I would say “I made them want me to send it to you?” and I would send them for free!
Well… my two weeks was up and I was charged over $100 for a YEAR of Adobe! OOPS!
At this time in life, my husband and I were working VERY hard to pay off debt to be able to purchase our first home and let’s just say we did NOT have $100+ to spare. I knew that I had to so SOMETHING to make my $100 back, so I began asking friends to let me make a logo for their small business to get my money back.
My first logo was a hit, once the second and third logo were shared on Facebook, the messages asking me to create a logo for this small business and this Facebook group or page, and I began charging $25 for each logo and quickly made back my $100.
I thought that would be the end of it, but the small business community had other plans for me, and here I am, over 2 years later, running Little Black Logo full time and am planning a HUGE extension this fall!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think any business owner would say that owning a small business is a “smooth road”. There is a lot to learn when running your own business. We have to create policies and terms, set boundaries, find work-life balance, avoid burnout, research social media algorithms and trends, and of course, TAXES.
But, learning all of these things, navigating all of these things, makes us a better, successful, productive, and well-rounded small business owner.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Little Black Logo creates custom logos, graphics, marketing materials, and websites for small business owners with the small business, and family, budget in mind!
Since my business began during a time where I was struggling financially, it has been, and will always be a priority for my services to be affordable. Behind every small business is a family, and the family budget is just as important as the small business budget.
Each and every one of my clients are able to create their own bundle based on their businesses needs and their budget.
One thing that I am incredibly proud of is the Networking Wall in my office.
It started with 3 small hexagon cork boards and has grown to 9 cork boards in just two short years, and will need to be added to soon!
Each time I make a business card, flyer, postcard, services menu, or sticker for a client, I snag one from their order and add it to my networking wall. When a client comes to me and says “Hey, I need someone to make some t-shirts.” or “Do you know any bookkeepers?” or even “My house is a mess and I just don’t have time, do you know anyone who can clean the house?” I have a whole wall of other small business that I can connect them with! I wholeheartedly believe in Community OVER Competition, and my networking wall allows me to help small business owners connect and grow the business small community!
What do you think about luck?
Luck is just HARD WORK done behind the scenes that people finally get to see.
I have often heard “Oh you’re so lucky, you made an oops and now have a successful business.”
But the truth of it is, it STARTED as an oops, but it took hard work, planning, budgeting, research, learning, hiring a business strategist, and MORE behind the scenes to get where I am.
