Life & Work with Jonathan Yates of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Yates.

Hi Jonathan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It was writing that led me into standup comedy, as it had done for so many other endeavors.

Writing is my passion; and has, many times, been my profession. I was working on a script that had a comedy scene. I wanted to try out the jokes before a live audience. At that time, November 2021, I was living in Chapel Hill, NC. The local comedy club had an open night. I went and had a great time. The next year, I was in the World Series of Comedy; and here I am today, producing shows!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Standup comedy has been great, very smooth. Everyone has been very supportive. It is a long haul, to be sure. But so far nothing but feeling the luv to report.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My focus now is to produce and host comedy shows to aid nonprofits, especially animals. I have one coming up in Ohio on Sunday October 25 at Krackposts, a great comedy club in Massillon, to benefit the Cleveland Animal Protection. The owner of Krackpot’s, Chris Kelter, and the good folk from the Cleveland Animal Protection League have been wonderful to work with for the show. I encourage all to make the show as it will be a blast to aid a great cause. I hosted and produced a comedy show for the Anne Arundel County SPCA in February in Annapolisand it sold out with everyone laughing all the way from start to finish!

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Nothing new here: just get out there and hustle!

Go to as many festivals and events as possible. Talk to the hosts and producers. They will help line you up with opportunities. The World Series of Comedy is an events comics should try to attend. When you feel comfortable, work with the local restaurants and clubs to put on your own comedy shows. There is a lot of talent out there looking for shows!
