Life & Work with Jeff Vale of Sheffield Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Vale.

Hi Jeff , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in and graduated from Avon. At 21 I moved to Missouri with my wife and attended Evangel University. We stayed in Missouri for almost 19 years, had 3 kids, and owned several businesses. I worked in the insurance industry and after covid the insurance industry had some hard times in the states where I worked. I decided to take my passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and move back to where to grew up to invest in Lorain county and open my own academy. I am a 2 time IBJJF Pan Champion, 2 Time IBJJF Masters Worlds Champion, and an IBJJF Nogi Pan Champion.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Moving after 19 years and relocating our kids was tough. Finding a location and building it out also presented challenges but Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches you to stay calm through adversity so we got the job done.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are the first Caio Terra Association academy in Ohio. Caio Terra is my professor and a 12 time world champion. He is one of the greatest competitors in our sport and also one of the greatest coaches. Our academy is clean, organized, and we follow a proven curriculum that allows people to build a good foundation for their Jiu Jitsu and life. Hence the name Substructure Jiu Jitsu.

What does success mean to you?
I define success as becoming the best version of yourself. It doesn’t matter what others are doing, just that a person gets a little better every day.
