Today we’d like to introduce you to James Ruehlman
Hi James, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Jim Ruehlman, aka Know Rulz, is a sonic alchemist known for his eclectic taste and raw energy. A Cincinnati native, he’s crafted a unique sound that blends Folk, Pop, Rock, Soul, and RnB, creating an irresistible vibe wherever he plays—whether it’s local breweries, bars, or busking in OTR and The Banks with The Street Stage Project.
His musical journey began in middle school, teaching himself guitar and jamming in cover bands before stepping into the spotlight as the bassist for Celestials in college. The pandemic shifted his path, but instead of retreating, he embraced the chaos, going solo and thriving in the indie scene.
After finding success with his Boss RC30 looper pedal, he upgraded to the Roland 404, unleashing a whirlwind of creativity that fueled his songwriting. He’s been rocking with MULTIMAGIC since 2018, where he helped build a studio in the Mohawk district, but it’s his solo work that truly showcases his artistry.
Jim first took the stage at a talent show in 2008, and since then, he’s captivated crowds as a frontman, turning every performance into an interactive experience. His early EP, Path to Self, released with high-school friend Ryan Stochinsky, marked the beginning of his journey. Notable tracks include Manic Daze with MULTIMAGIC, where he lays down haunting leads and back-up vocals.
Inspired by the likes of The Flaming Lips, MGMT, and Tame Impala, Jim’s live sets are all about improvisation, allowing him to tap into a meditative flow that transforms each performance into a unique sonic exploration. With his guitar in hand and a relentless passion for music, Know Rulz is carving his own path in the indie scene.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The pandemic set Multimagic back with our Manic Daze release falling right before the lockdown. We had tours canceled and couldn’t do anything but build out our dream studio at Felsenhaus. Eventually our hard work was lost with the sale of the building. We jumped into another studio where we currently create called Sycamore studios.
As far as my solo career goes, everyday I’m plagued with crippling self doubt and impostor syndrome. Typically due to the fact that much of my family feels that music isn’t enough to support me financially. Or that I’m not a 20 year old anymore with a degree in music or have only just begun to really try to pursue music as a career. That all goes away during a Multimagic set or rehearsal or a solo set or when I’m creating. The love of creation and the positive feedback really keeps me going.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m most known for my work with Multimagic as a guitar player and producer. I specialize in guitar and vocals. I’m very proud of Manic Daze, MULTIMAGIC’s first full length record. What sets me apart from others is my solo work and multi-instrumental live looping and sampling. I like to create my own samples and perform as flowing set that in unique sounding yet still easily accessible.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 5-10 years I see myself having produced more records with Multimagic and as KnowRulz performing on the road in various regional cities as well as branching out to the west coast for tours. Would love to perform for Jimmy Kimmel or one of the cool talk shows. Ideally get a tour with one of my favorite bands like the flaming lips, Alvvays, future islands, STRFKR.
