Life & Work with Donisha Andrews

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donisha Andrews.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been an artist my whole life. As an adult My background was in fashion design, merchandising, and retail which I did for a few years before I decided to be a stay-at-home mom with my 2 oldest children. Once my son who is the younger of the 2 started kindergarten, I was on the hunt for something new and exciting I could do with my time. I had always loved to get my nails done but struggled to find someone who would do the intricate art that I wanted. Then one day I thought to myself, “I could do nails, and I could do all the designs I want to!” And just like that, I enrolled in beauty school. It wasn’t long before I realized I was actually a natural. I began doing my classmates’ nails as well as family and friends. My hairdresser at the time helped me find my first salon where I learned so much and began to build my clientele. Almost as soon as I started, I found out I was pregnant with a baby girl. As my due date approached, I was at one of my last doctors’ appointments when I was told she had passed away. It was the worst day of my life. My husband and I were crushed. After time spent healing, I became pregnant again. I really wanted to spend more time with my family so I drastically cut my hours and kind of just put nails on the back burner. When our newborn turned one I moved to a new salon where I was able to reignite my passion and learn every new technique I could find. I wanted to bring the latest advancements in the nail industry right here to Cincinnati. I always say there it’s nothing I can’t do, and if there is something I’m not sure about I’m definitely going to try. My clientele started to grow tremendously, and I was so happy. About a year in at the new salon I found out I was again expecting! I continued to work as usual but also compiled a list of goals I wanted to accomplish in my life and career. I know I wanted to be with my children more. I wanted to make more income. I wanted to provide certain services and use specific products. It was time for me to go out on my own. While I was on maternity leave, I began putting my plans into action. Once I found my location, all the other pieces fell into place. I returned to my workplace for 2 months to acclimate my clients back into their nail routines and letting them know my big plans. I was truly terrified. But when I tell you having my own nail salon has been nothing short of amazing! I have received so much love and support as well as an abundance of new clients. Even better, I have the flexibility to work when I want and even bring my children (they have their own playroom set up in the back). I’m only 4 months in, but I can’t wait to see what the future has to offer!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The beauty industry is not for the faint of heart. Many days I sat with not one client. I made mistakes. I had difficult customers. I’ve dealt with toxic work environments. But I can say there is light at the end of the tunnel. I stayed consistent and never gave up on the dream.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a nail artist. I specialize in nail enhancements like polygel, gel-x, and acrylic. I offer all of the standard nail services as well. I would say I’m known for unique nail art that is affordable. I also offer a personalized experience. Not cookie cutter or chopshop. I follow all state board guidelines, and I am fully licensed. I’m proud of how I began this journey with not one single client and have now built up my business to a point where my books are getting full weeks or even months in advance. I think what sets me apart from others is my skill in many different techniques, my amazing customer service, my work ethic, and my passion. This isn’t just a job for me; this is my obsession!

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
(This may sound weird) I find most of my inspiration and motivation within. I’ve always been fiercely independent. I don’t like a lot of advice. Of course, my husband and children push me and encourage me. And I do get inspired by my friends in the industry and I love Instagram where I can connect with other nail artist and companies from all over the world.
