Life & Work with DiamondGrl

Today we’d like to introduce you to DiamondGrl.

Hi Diamond, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Hi! My name is Diamond, aka DiamondGrl, and I am a singer-songwriter, visual artist, model, and actress. I am also a college student who is an aspiring Music Therapist! As far as my music career goes, it all started from me participating in school choirs to then doing talent shows, studio sessions, and getting booked for shows!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes, for the most part, but no. Not always! Some of the challenges I face as an artist is caring about other people’s opinions of me, always expecting good feedback on my music, and certain content that I’ll post on my social media based on my passion for music, art, etc. I also pay for my own music videos, studio time, photo shoots, and everything else, which can also be a struggle at times because those things can be super expensive! Then, of course, I sometimes have a tendency of struggling to speak up on certain things that don’t suit me well just to please others. But I’ve gotten better at that! I am a lot more outspoken than I ever was before, and yes, I did lose certain people along the way who I considered my “friends” just from doing that. However, that right there told me that those people were not meant to stick around forever or be in my life forever, and I had to learn to accept that.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I express my creativity through vocal performance, songwriting, rapping, modeling, acting, and visual art, which includes painting, drawing, and mixed media art. I discovered my passion for both vocal performance and visual art at the age of three. I participated in school choirs in third grade, and during my participation, I enjoyed vocal warm-ups, learning and performing the various vocal performance pieces, and auditioning for solo performances. My voice type is soprano. Pop, Jazz, Contemporary, Alternative, Soul, and R&B are the main musical genres that I am influenced by. Ever since I was in middle school, that was when I got into songwriting, which allowed me to discover expressing my feelings through the lyrics and melody. Several of the musical influences, who inspired me to become a singer-songwriter are artists such as Stevie Wonder, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, India Arie, Sonyae Elise, Aaliyah, Anderson. Paak, The Internet, and many more!

What I am most proud of is my passion and dedication to music. What makes me different is that when it comes to the music, I put out, it has to do with the things I go through in life and self-development. I use that to influence and inspire others with a positive message, which touches their souls to where they can feel where I come from. My music also gives off ’90s/early 2000s, which is also what makes me different. Another thing about myself that I am most proud of is my versatility. With me also being a visual artist, the paintings that I create are what I consider my merch, and that is what I use to sell them to other people whether I’m selling my art at one of my shows, pop-up events, bars, traveling to other states/cities for business purposes, etc.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes, and that was to never get attached to certain people because the more attached I got to them, the more they ended up hurting me. This then led to me being able to write and put out music that had to do with allowing certain people to walk all over me. The next thing you know, “Sleep On Me” and “Play Games” were the first 2 bangers I put out on all platforms during the pandemic, which was right before I released my first EP called “Flower Child.” And believe it or not, the pandemic was when I first got into rapping!
