Today we’d like to introduce you to Denyce Renee.
Hi Denyce, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, thank you for this opportunity! Well, a little about me…I used to do wedding photography , as well as I was a full-time hairstylist. But for various reasons, I put photography on the back burner for several years. After some major life changes, though, I found my passion for photography again, only this time it’s in photographing musicians and dancers. I love the challenge of capturing their expressions and movements on camera.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s definitely been some struggles along the way. Finding the best way to shoot in the low lights of clubs has its own learning curve. And trying to earn income from photography when everyone has cameras in their pocket (cellphones) now is definitely a challenge! But in the end, I do it because I love it. My camera is an extension of me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m known for being a creative photographer. I dont usually take your everyday portrait. I like to place objects, crystals, Christmas bulbs, etc., in front of my lens for different effects, or use digital effects to create the vision I’m after.
One of the projects I’m currently working on is a recycled fashion series. I make costumes out of recycled or organic materials, like skeleton leaves or packing paper, and then do photoshoots around them. I’m hoping to hold a fashion show in the near future using these costumes, along with other like minded artists in my area.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
It makes me happy to see people enjoying my work. If they love a photo that I took of them on stage, or they loved a landscape photo that I took and they have it on their wall at home- that makes me happy. When you’re in an environment and with people who allow you to be authentic, its easy to be happy. I’m my most authentic self when I’m behind the camera.
