Today we’d like to introduce you to Darryl Moore. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Darryl Moore is a Fayetteville, NC native who holds a B.S. degree in Political Science and an M.Ed. in Education Personnel Administration from Tuskegee University. He is a professional actor who began his career doing stand-up in 2004 after an encounter with Comedian J. Anthony Brown of the popular “Tom Joyner Morning Show.” While hanging out with friends, Mr. Brown overheard Darryl joking with his friends and asked him if he’d ever done comedy, and at the time, he had not tried comedy. Mr. Brown immediately encouraged Darryl to give stand-up a try, and Darryl took his advice, and he has not looked back. Like any other new actor, Darryl began his career as a background actor. Others would get discouraged, but Darryl used this time to network and plan his next move. In 2008, Darryl decided to stop performing as a comedian and focus his attention on the film and television industry. Not only has he worked in front of the camera, but he has worked behind the camera as a Casting Director, Producer, Production Assistant, and Assistant Director. In 2009, he became a member of SAG-AFTRA after a speaking part in the movie “Lottery Ticket.” Recently, he completed writing his autobiography titled “Feel My Pain,” as well as a script for his first film project titled “Invisible Man,” based on his autobiography.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a child, I was misdiagnosed with ADD/HD. I was actually bipolar and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. This wasn’t discovered until I was 39. Unfortunately, I was mislabeled as being a child with a discipline problem. The remedy at that time was to heavily medicate children. My second grade teacher was so cruel that she isolated me behind a six-foot-high cardboard box. After college, I was never able to get a job paying much even though I have a master’s degree. Stress and mounting bills led to tension between my wife and I. Eventually, we parted. As time went on, I finally answered the call that was burning inside me. I participated in an open mic show, and my girlfriend at the time made good on her threat that she’d abort our baby and kick me out. I was homeless for a brief period sleeping in my truck. Grief-stricken over the death of my daughter, I became deeply depressed. Nightmares and sleepless nights almost destroyed me. I was battling this for almost two years while entertaining crowds and pursuing my acting career.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a professional actor and filmmaker. My interest are feature films, short films, documentaries, and music videos. I am most proud of my tenacity and perseverance in the face of adversity. I refuse to give up. I live by the saying, “delay does not mean denial.” Having that mindset is what sets me apart from other people.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am an introvert and loner. Even though I enjoy acting, I love solitude.
