Life & Work with Charity Hamilton of Struthers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charity Hamilton.

Charity , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have liked taking photos for a while. I got my first official camera I think when I was 15 for a missions trip. I took tons of pictures. I also took 2 years of photography in highschool, where one of my teacher’s bought me a camera off ebay and let me pay her back in payments. I was super excited to finally have a real professional camera! I took photos for yearbook and for fun too.

During college I didn’t pick up my camera as much but eventually started an Instagram page for the pictures I took. After I got married my MIL actually suggested me to someone as a wedding photographer, and I was a bit scared at first. I have always been the type who was afraid to charge too much or was afraid I wouldn’t be good enough. I did end up doing the wedding though! I didn’t charge anything as it was my first wedding, but each one since I’ve charged a bit more as I gain experience and next month will be my 4th wedding.

I also do senior portraits, family photos, and engagements along with the weddings. I would love to eventually have enough business to do it full time so I can stay home with my little boy and still bring in an income. It’s been about 4 years now since I officially made a website and named my photography business. I’m still learning and growing, but it’s been a great experience. It’s a privilege to be a part of capturing the sacred moments in people’s lives.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest struggle is confidence I think. I always worry I’m not good enough or they won’t like the results, etc. I also am just starting to learn some of the bookwork/taxes parts of it, which I still have a lot to learn about. Then learning to try new things can be a bit scary but trying to put myself out there sometimes.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I take photos for weddings, families, special occasions, special milestones, etc…

I think I’m most proud that I started and decided to do something I’d never done before. And I’ve learned a lot along the way.

I’d say I’m pretty chill and down to earth. I try to do my best. I just try to show what I see and share people’s story through pictures. Then they can always remember those special times even once they’re over.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’m not sure I believe in luck, but I’m blessed. I have an awesome family, in-laws, and an amazing husband who helps me believe in myself. They push me to have more confidence in myself and put myself out there.
