Life & Work with Camille Sisson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camille Sisson.

Hi Camille, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I truly believe that everyone has greatness in them. I often used to wonder if I had any talent at all! I knew I wanted to be my own boss, but most importantly I wanted to love what I do! I worked at Amazon for a while and loved it.

Then my mother passed away in September of 2020, unexpectedly. My whole world was shattered, and I could no longer see the point of anything anymore. Months had passed. I took a leave from work; taking advantage of my time off I had a moment to think about what is it that I wanted to do, and what excites me. You know how you see an Ad on social media after you’ve thought about something? Well, I saw an ad about event designing and there was a four-day class being held in Florida!

Without a second thought, I immediately joined and booked my flight and stay within 30 minutes! I looked up and told my boyfriend what I’d just done l.o.l and his exact words were “Oh you were serious!”

Two months later in March of 2021, he and our 2 children drove me to Cleveland Hopkins Airport and said “I got the kids don’t worry. Go chase your dream!”

As I walked down the corridor and took my seat, I immediately thought “WHAT THE HECK AM I DOING!”

The classes were all hands-on and very informal. I learned the basics of event designing. A Few more months passed by I decided to sign up for the “Luxe Classes” with the same company. This time being held in June for three days in Chicago. Welp! The family and I loaded up my dodge journey and hit the road! I was determined, I told myself if I am going to do this then I have to be very competent and knowledgeable about my field. So, I continued to invest into my profession. We were taught pipe and drape draping techniques, table décor and placing, floral decor, ceiling draping, how to install custom vinyl dance floor wraps etc.! Just about everything that you can think about having at your wedding, corporate event, or baby shower.

Still thinking about what else I can learn and add to the list of many things that I’ve just mastered, I signed up for a two-day balloon class. Which was being held in Atlanta, in October! My sister booked our flight and we were OUT! I actually taught myself how to make balloon garlands from YouTube but knew I needed help on perfecting it! I already knew how to make garlands, but my instructor taught me how to make ART, how to be unique, and how to book clients!

Considering that I am just getting started, I am mostly focusing on balloon décor. My goal is to be doing full events by this time next year. I know that I can do it this year, however, I want to move correctly, you know? I don’t want to rush things and deliver tacky work because I feel like I have to “catch up”. Pretty soon I’ll be doing it all, stay tuned!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Yes and no! There were a few obstacles that I faced especially when it came to equipment and clients. I visited a few hotels and offered to do complimentary Christmas holiday decor with aspirations that it would help get my name out there. I was declined! I expressed what it was that I was trying to accomplish and they kept telling me to fill out a job application on their site! Thanks, but no thanks! So, I give it by next holiday season they’re going to call Draped N’ Latex LLC for their decor!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Draped N’ Latex LLC is balloon decor and design company. We provide event decor for most social events i.e., baby showers, birthday parties, corporate events, and weddings, etc. With a focus on organic balloon decor, by “organic” I mean the balloons are unstructured. Organic balloon design is a bubbly, 3-dimensional, luxurious look! I say that my balloon work is a luxury, which is true. Any event will most likely have balloons though not all events will have a dramatic balloon design from floor to ceiling. Or something less dramatic but still luxurious like an organic balloon garland. Balloon decor is definitely the WOW that POPS at every event! Your guests will be AMAZED! I am proud of my eagerness to keep moving forward and my determination to be better than I was yesterday! I think what sets me apart from others is that…and I don’t everyone else but speaking for myself, other than my babies, I think about designing all day! It’s become a part of me. I’m constantly learning and practicing new skills. Just this past week I’ve taught myself new techniques that I don’t see other designers using. My goal is to understand every client’s wishes and exceed their expectations. I absolutely refuse to provide mediocre work!

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
OH, WOW YES! so many people! First IWED – which was the event design school I attended. Then there’s Jay, who was my balloon instructor his company is What’s Poppin balloon decor in Atlanta. My boyfriend who constantly pushes me and holds my balloon bags so they don’t fly away when I’m doing an install! (I really appreciate that). Jim O’Bryan, he’s the owner/publisher of The Lakewood Observer. Stacey Burnett who’s a successful Real Estate Professional. Two more wonderful ladies Hannah and Sarah and baby Aila. I did a balloon install on the Cleveland script sign at Edgewater beach back in April where I met these wonderful people. They were just strolling by and loved what they saw and all expressed words of encouragement and wished me well on my success. They all took photos, my business cards, and info! Jim O’Bryan made a wonderful post about me on his Facebook page that received a lot of positive feedback. Stacey told me to do more! She was really excited. The best part is that I never saw them before and they ALL reposted my work on their social media, to their other family and friends. Hey if you all see this, I am really glad I met you all and I appreciate you. Support is hard to find. They only met me for about 10 minutes and supported me within seconds! And to all the other people who stopped to take photos and say a kind word, I thank you too! Oh, can’t forget my two children Rayven (4) and Joshua (2)…my little balloon poppers!
