Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Kraschinsky
Hi Anthony, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Bodhi Tree started off as dreams of something bigger dating all the way back to the Paul Bunyon Show!
I love trees, the environment, and people.
So deciding to start my own company came as an easy decision!
My inspiration came from the name Bodhi. It’s my 10 year old sons name and it’s a species of fig tree. Specifically, the one Buddah sat under during his “quest”.
As a name, it means, “enlightened one”.
I was allowed to use a chainsaw starting at a very young age, and was hooked right away. I remember the smell of the gasoline mixture, the way a saw made your hands feel, and how dirty you always got!
At the Paul Bunyan show, we would wake up and immediately hear the saws running and smell that mix in the air.
There was always good food and the best lumber jack shows around! Log rolling, jousting, chainsaw carvings and so much more. In fact, I had to be carried into my first show! That was back in October of 1987.
My most fond memory is hanging out around the campfire with all of our family and friends. My worst memory is watching my favorite shirt combust into flames while it was drying on the back of a chair after we had played in the mud all day. We always had the best time there, and now I am able to take my son every year to enjoy the show from an entirely different perspective. We’re business owners now! It’s become a family tradition!
As is our business in a way!
My son can do everything from take a phone call to running a saw, and everything in between!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been easy at all. I did not go to business school and have had to rely on my support group, friends that are also business owners, and colleagues to get to the point I am at now with Bodhi Tree. As an example, navigating how to properly record sales tax and figuring out how to file and pay that each month has been a journey in and of itself. What I will say about that, though, is that the individuals working on the other end of things are super helpful! I have had to ask so many questions over the years, and every time, they’re patient with me about it and always willing to help me get things taken care of.
I can climb trees like you wouldn’t believe! Sitting at a computer is an entirely different animal, to say the least! I’m not the type of person that can sit still for long, which has proven to be a blessing and a curse in its own right.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Our main focus is to establish lasting relationships with our customers! Period. We wouldn’t have been in business for as long as we have without that mindset from the very start. In addition to that, though, taking care of our trees here on earth is our second priority. We literally need our trees in order to breathe, so I have personally taken on my own challenge to save and maintain as many of our trees as I can. Whether that be through fertilizing them, pruning them, passing on the knowledge I have to the homeowner, or just a combination of everything so as to empower our customers as much as we can.
We do such a wide range of projects that it can get a little hectic at certain times of the year!
Our main focus from a work standpoint is tree pruning and removals. We do a lot of fertilization, as well as fungicide and insecticide applications, but with those, we are extremely strategic and pragmatic with our approach. One example of that would just be that we use a “direct injection” method when applying any fertilizer or chemical compound. This way, there is a minimal, if any, chance of this stuff leaching out into the soil where our children and dogs run around.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I think that what matters most might be quite obvious, in that we care about the trees! Some of my friends outside of work crack jokes about The Lorax all the time, and it’s always a good conversation piece. That isn’t everything though. We really mean what we say, and we say what we mean when it comes to the proper approach to taking care of YOUR trees! Just a quick example being that we typically do not like to prune oak trees in the summertime. “Oak wilt” is real and very serious. So, if we prune them in the winter, while they’re dormant, they’re much less likely to become infected. We are also taking the proper precautions; bleaching chainsaws before we start cutting, and after were finished so that if they are infected, it will be less likely to spread. With any sign of oak wilt in our customers’ trees we will send out a sample to be tested. That is done by The Ohio State University. So in the end, we are just willing to go to great lengths to take care of our cuatomers and their trees.
